How did you get on with column subtraction on Monday? I hope you like it as a new method in your toolkit. You might want to use it in your 6 questions now if you think it is quicker than counting up (remember I always say find the most efficient method to use, so sometimes it isn’t the quickest way!). Now you can do two-digit numbers with the column method, you can also do three digits!
The same rules apply:
- Set you numbers out in the correct place value like so…
- Make sure the largest number is on the top…
- Start from the right hand side – so in our case the ‘ones’ column. Subtract the ones and put the result underneath, like this…
- Now subtract the ‘tens’ column and put the result underneath.
- But then you have to subtract the hundreds.

I hope you enjoyed the Lost Thing film. If you didn’t get chance to look at it, here is the link to the film. Today I’d like you to design and describe your own lost pet. You can base it on a pet you have or would like or even a completely made up one!
Here is a template to create your own ‘lost’ poster. Remember to really describe your pet using some fabulous adjectives!

LO: What was the most important rule Jesus gave to people?
Why do we have rules? There are lots of rules that we have to follow. Which is the most important school rule? Are they all important?
Where else do we have rules? Talk with your adult.
What do you think would be the most important rule for living a good life? There are also rules in the Bible. Do you remember the name of the rules given to Moses?
Moses was given 10 Commandments in the Old Testament which some people believe are rules that we should all try to keep.
Jesus said that the two most important rules are: to love God and to love each other.

Transition Tuesday 7th July

Hello again class 2!
It's so lovely to get the opportunity once again to post a blog to you all! I'm really looking forward to you all joining me in September and have so many wonderful activities planned for you all!
Thank you for sending me all your lovely photos last week and for sending your questions for my current class. They were very excited about replying to you and have written some letters for you. Here is just a sample!
One or two of you gave me letters too; here are some of my replies .....
- Yes I do love pets. I have a dog called Poppy!
- Yes, I do like chocolate, chocolate cake and an occasional cup of coffee too (although I am being good at the moment)!!
- Yes you are right, I do love art.
- We will do lots of sport; gymnastics, hockey, netball, cricket, dance, athletics, rugby, orienteering and much more!!
- We don't tend to do 'Go noodle' but we do exercise every single day and during some of our other lessons too!! We like to keep fit in class 3!!

Literacy;
Today I'd really like you to write your own letter. You could write a little letter to me if you like to ask me any further questions and to tell me what sorts of things you'd quite like to do during your first week in class 3.
If you prefer you can write a letter back to class 3 to thank them for their letters. It is entirely up to you.
Please make sure your letter is written in your best handwriting using your very best punctuation and spelling. Make sure it looks bright and colourful too! You might want to decorate it or add a colourful picture.

Activity;
L.O. To create 2D shapes and hence an interesting piece of art work!!
You can use whatever resources you like for this activity. You might want to use cocktail sticks, crayons, match sticks, chocolate matchmakers (yum), pasta or whatever you can!! Let's see who can use the most original item!!
Choose a contrasting background and create as many 2D shapes as you can with the items you use. Can you add a label for each shape you make? Can you take a photo?
If you like you could have a go at creating one or two 3D shapes too if you like; you'll need tasty marshmallows or blue-tac for the vertices though!
Art:
Finally, here's an exciting challenge for you! Please can you select items from your recycling bin and create a model of whatever you want; it is entirely up to you. You can use whatever you have to fix the items together and if you have some do make use of paint and create a realistic and colourful model. You might decide to make an animal (perhaps Australian), an alien, a structure of some kind.....the choice is yours! If you add glue to your paint you will find it sticks to the model much better. Have fun! I might even have a go myself!!

Remote Learning Monday 6th July 2020

Good morning my lovely Year 2 class, how was your weekend? We had a venture over to Wentworth Garden Centre and village for a walk and I bought some more herbs for the garden! I picked some more veg from the patch - here's a picture especially for Zachary, Izzy and anyone else who's attempting to grown their own at the moment!
I also went to see my nephew, Ewan who has just had a week at home after 13 weeks in hospital. I waved at the window to him and he’s really doing great - showing such strength and courage. I think all my Class 2 families have also shown strength and courage over the last 100+ days in many different ways. I can’t wait to see you all on Thursday 16th July – have you booked your session yet?

LO: column subtracting 2-digits take 2-digits no exchanging
- 235 + 22 = ?
- Partition 28 in 3 different ways.
- 45 - 27 = ?
- 15 ÷ 3 =
- What number is 10 more than 96?
- What’s the time? (Ideally look at an analogue clock for this one not a digital clock!).
Here we have the numbers 35 and 23. Think about how you would subtract these numbers…
You could use the number line method and count up from 23 to 35. You could take away the tens and then take away the ones.
Today we’re going to look at a new way of subtracting two 2-digit numbers together by using the ‘column subtraction’ method.
With this method (like with the column addition method), it is important that you set your work out really neatly and ensure your numbers are in the correct place value.
There are a few rules with column subtraction – if you follow them, you’ll be flying! Here goes…
1) Set you numbers out in the correct place value like so…
Make sure the largest number is on the top
2) Start from the right hand side – so in our case the ‘ones’ column. Subtract the ones and put the result underneath, like this…
4) Now subtract the ‘tens’ column and put the result underneath.
Now try this one: 47 - 22 =
Did you get the answer 25? Could you check by adding 22 + 25 together using columns?

What is your response to the film? Talk to your adult about what you like or dislike about the animation. What do you think about the colours of the film? How about the sounds? What do you think about the lost thing itself?
TASK: In a style and artform of your choice, make a fantasy world filled with remarkable creatures – this could be a drawing on paper, or some natural art outside. You might make a box model or use Lego. Be creative! As you are making/building/drawing think of adjectives you could use to describe your fantasy world.

You already know lots about the animals of Australia from your research in Week 1 but today you’re going delve deeper into the weird and wonderful creatures of Australia. Go through the presentation with your adult – read as much of it yourself as you can. Then have a go at this matching activity:

Happy Friday everyone! Another week has gone by, only two more left in the summer term. It really does feel like a long time for those of you not in school. I hope you all read the newsletter this week about coming into school for a little while, so we can chat and say goodbye properly. I really can’t wait to see you!

I’ve been super impressed with your column addition this week. You are remembering to line up your numbers in the correct place value, start from the right hand side and put your answers in the equal sign at the bottom.

Have a look at Purple Mash today, Mr Kershaw has recommended ‘Serial Mash’, which is a reading app. I’ve set you a reading ‘to do’ and a quiz ‘to do’. Please let me know what you think of them as many children in Year 5 have been enjoying them!
The descriptions of the rabbit that you emailed me were fantastic! Here’s Tatham’s. I love the way he’s really thought about his sentence starts.
Today we are going to look at another one of Shaun Tan’s illustrations:
This one is a very strange character. Again, discuss with your adult what you think is happening in the picture. What kind of fish is it? Can you give it a name? Where did the fish come from?
I’d like you to use my sentence opener to inspire your writing – rewrite the start in your book and then continue to write – keep thinking about the image:
Finally, he grasped it in both hands. He’d waited for this moment for many months – many years in fact. Now it was here…
Remember to think about how the feels, what the fish might feel like to touch, where he might go with the fish, the reaction he might get from his family. Happy writing!
