Happy Friday everyone! Another week has gone by, only two more left in the summer term. It really does feel like a long time for those of you not in school. I hope you all read the newsletter this week about coming into school for a little while, so we can chat and say goodbye properly. I really can’t wait to see you!

So the suggested schedule for today is as follows...

E.R.I.C. - Everybody Reading in Class for 20 mins

Active time - Go Noodle or cosmic yoga

Maths/Literacy - do this in batches of 20 mins each, build in breaks.

Creative Friday

Maths

LO: Column Addition

  • 147 + 21 = ?
  • Partition 16 in 3 different ways.
  • 98 - 18 = ?
  • 50 ÷ 5 =
  • What number is 11 more than 64?
  • Make £2.30 with 3 coins

I’ve been super impressed with your column addition this week. You are remembering to line up your numbers in the correct place value, start from the right hand side and put your answers in the equal sign at the bottom.

Today I’d like you to use this method but with word problems. Let’s do one together…

  1. Jack has 25 conkers and he finds another 14 conkers. How many conkers does Jack have altogether?

Set your work out correctly…

Now try the rest on this sheet!

English

Have a look at Purple Mash today, Mr Kershaw has recommended ‘Serial Mash’, which is a reading app. I’ve set you a reading ‘to do’ and a quiz ‘to do’. Please let me know what you think of them as many children in Year 5 have been enjoying them!

The descriptions of the rabbit that you emailed me were fantastic! Here’s Tatham’s. I love the way he’s really thought about his sentence starts.

Today we are going to look at another one of Shaun Tan’s illustrations:

This one is a very strange character. Again, discuss with your adult what you think is happening in the picture. What kind of fish is it? Can you give it a name? Where did the fish come from?

I’d like you to use my sentence opener to inspire your writing – rewrite the start in your book and then continue to write – keep thinking about the image:

Finally, he grasped it in both hands. He’d waited for this moment for many months – many years in fact. Now it was here…

Remember to think about how the feels, what the fish might feel like to touch, where he might go with the fish, the reaction he might get from his family. Happy writing!

 Creative Friday

This week I’ve set you a ‘to do’ in Purple Mash –

Also I’d like you to start contributing to our new ‘memories’ Padlet.

MEMORIES PADLET

I’ve kicked it off with one of my favourite memories of Year 2. Now I’d like you to add one or more of your favourite memories too!

Have a fantastic day and send me all your photos by lunchtime to ensure you appear in this week’s gallery.

A howdy do and good morning to all of you!

During the lockdown, one of my fish sadly passed away, a male ram! Since then our female ram has been very dull in colour and very shy. Over the weekend, my partner, James, went to get our water from the tank tested and came back with a surprise and here it is …

You guessed it, a new male ram! Meet Rupert! As soon as he settled into the tank the female ram came to life. She is now full of colour and roaming about the tank following Rupert around!

What do you think?

Here's the suggested timetable:

E.R.I.C. - Everybody Reading in Class for 20mins (remember to record your reading in your reading record)

Active time - Joe Wicks is showing guiding a PE lesson at 9am (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ)

Don’t forget GoNoodle:

https://www.gonoodle.com/

Break – Can you make an activity up that we could do inside to pass the time when it is raining? It could be art, music, drama or PE related, it is up to you!

Today, we are going to look at how animals work together to stay alive. Living things in a habitat depend on each other. This means they need each other to stay alive. Squirrels and oak trees are part of a woodland habitat. The squirrel needs the oak tree for:

Food: Acorns are a squirrel’s favourite food.

Safety: Living high in an oak tree gives squirrels protection from foxes and badgers, and gives them a safe place to have babies.

Shelter: The oak tree protects the squirrel from the wind, cold and rain, and bigger animals.

The oak tree needs the squirrel to spread its seeds. The squirrel collects lots of acorns, and buries some to save for later. It carries them far away from the tree and hides them under the ground, away from other animals. Sometimes the squirrels forget to go and dig them up again. These acorns grow into new oak trees.

So:

The squirrel needs the oak tree for food and shelter.

The oak tree needs the squirrel to spread seeds so new trees can grow.

The oak tree and the squirrel depend on each other. This means they need each other to stay alive.

Your task for today is to choose a habitat, read the labels, then stick them onto the habitat to show how the living things in the habitat work together. Then complete the sentences to say how animals and plants depend on each other to stay alive.

The Arctic

The Desert

The Rainforest

Good luck!

How thrilling that you have been getting to know Mrs Matthews on Transition Tuesday!

Now, moving to a new year group is very exciting as you will learn lots of new topics and be role models for KS1. It is okay to feel a little nervous about moving upstairs especially as you haven’t been in school in quite a while!

Today, I would like you to make list everything that you are looking forward to about moving up to year 3. Then write down all of your worries so you can discuss them with people at home. Let me tell you, year 3 is such an amazing place to be and I know that you will love it!

PE

This week is the penultimate week of your Olympic games!

Today, I would like you to have a go at frisbcus!

Frisbcus is just like discus but with a frizbee! The discus is an event that is undertaken at both the Olympic and Paralympic games! As you won’t have access to a real discus at home why not use a frizbee or something in the shape of a discus as your piece of sporting equipment.

You need to take a stance like you did for the sock-putt. See how far you throw it from standing on the spot, feet shoulder-width apart. Place the frisbcus in the palm of your hand, grip on to the edge with your fingers then flip you hand over while still holding the object. Lean back on your back leg and bring your hand with the frisbcus around so it is level with your bent leg. You are going to push your weight forward and while you are doing that, swing your arm around to the front and release the frisbcus! How can you measure the distance that your frisbcus has travelled? Let us know how you get on! Here is a link to a video of the actual discus at the Olympic games and Paralympic games:

Last week you did an amazing job of making music to match the summer weather  so this week I would like you to make some music to match the weather, cloudy and rainy!

Have fun and fabulous day but remember to take some time to have a rest!

Good morning Class 2! I hope that you are OK today.  A big thank you to Mrs Matthews for taking over the blog yesterday again as part of our transition work. If you have any work to send to her, please email to class3@netherthongprimary.co.uk

Thank you for all the ‘safe in the sun’ posters you did – since then it’s done nothing but rain! So I set Florence an extra challenge of producing a poster about things to do in the rain. Here it is, we might need it over the next week or so! Thank you Florence!

So the suggested schedule for today is as follows...

E.R.I.C. - Everybody Reading in Class for 20 mins

Active time - Joe Wicks is back showing a PE lesson at 9am or Go Noodle – another recommendation from me is ‘Two Princes’ – your mums and dads might remember this one!

Maths/Literacy - do this in batches of 20 mins each, build in breaks.

R.E.

Maths

LO: column addition 3-digits add 2-digits no re-grouping

  • 140 + 35 = ?
  • Partition 13 in 3 different ways.
  • 76 - 59 = ?
  • 50 ÷ 5 =
  • What number is 9 more than 46?
  • Make £1.15 with 3 coins

How did you get on with column addition on Monday? I hope you like it as a new method in your toolkit. You might want to use it in your 6 questions now if you think it is quicker than a partitioning method (remember I always say find the most efficient method to use!). Now you can do two-digit numbers with the column method, you can also do three digits!

The same rules apply:

  • Set you numbers out in the correct place value like so…

  • Start from the right hand side – so in our case the ‘ones’ column. Add the ones up and put the total underneath, like this…

  • Now add the ‘tens’ column up and put the number underneath.

  • But then you have to add the hundreds. A tip is to add a zero if you have a space, this will help you when you come to do more advanced column addition!

Now try this one yourself…. 146 + 23. Set it out clearly in the right columns.

Do you like it? Now try this sheet.

English

I hope you enjoyed researching about Shaun Tan. Today I’d like you to look at one of his illustrations…

I love the way Shaun has captured an intense feeling in the rabbit’s eyes. I think he looks like he’s just kidnapped the bird and is running away. What do you think? Discuss your thoughts with your adult. Then I’d like you to write either a story start or a description of the picture. You could think about what happened before this image or even afterwards. Remember to include different sentences types and sentence starts.

R.E.

LO: What did Jesus teach about forgiveness and generosity?

Jesus often used parables (story with a hidden meaning) to help people understand more about God.

What does it mean to forgive?  Have you ever had to forgive anyone?

How did you feel?  Was it difficult for you? Why?

When you do something wrong at home – do you say sorry?

Do your parents forgive you?  How does that make you feel?

Have a look at the story of the Prodigal Son: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJgROx4wFKM

How do you think the two sons felt in the story? Talk about this with your adult. Now have a go at sequencing the story using these story cards. Cut them up, shuffle them and put them in the correct order.

I hope you have a wonderful day! Keep smiling!

'Transition Tuesday' 30.6.20

admin on: Class 2

Good morning again class 2!

I am delighted to be able to add another blog for you all today. I was so impressed with your fabulous work last week and all your amazing photos; thank you so much for sending them to me. I hope you spotted them on Mrs Barker's 'Friday Photo Gallery'!

Here are some activities for you to try today! I hope you enjoy them! Please don't feel pressured to do everything if time is tricky and just select those you can manage. Have fun and enjoy!

Yoga;

Why not begin the day with a little gentle yoga?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02E1468SdHg

Reading;

As always, spend some special 1 to 1 reading time with Mum or Dad. Listen to them read a story to you and then it's your turn. Remember to try and read with exciting expression and try and think carefully about what you're reading as I'd like Mum or Dad to quiz you afterwards about your book!!

Maths;

6 questions (remember to check; is it an addition or subtraction?)

  1. 45 + 24 (will you use columns or calculate your 10s and then your ones?)
  2. 37 + 32
  3. 62 + 25
  4. 64 - 22
  5. 74 - 32
  6. 54 - 23

Problem;

If Mrs Barker had 45 books on her book shelf and Miss Kelly gave her 24 more, how many would she now have?

Activity;

Do you like shopping? I definitely do!!

Here's a little shopping task......

Things to do with kids during Lockdown | Parenting Hub

You may need to ask Mum or Dad to help you, but I'd really like you to make your own little grocery shop today! With an adult's help, select items from the cupboard and give them all prices (ranging from 10p to £1 to begin with but then higher prices when you're ready). Have fun preparing your shop. You'll need lots of items to sell, a table, a chair for the shopkeeper, a shopping basket (or alternative!!), carrier bags (recyclable of course!), a pencil and paper for calculations and lots of coins!

Before you begin you may want to remind yourself of the value of each of the coins.

Take turns to be the shopkeeper and customer.

As the customer, select 2 items to begin with (may be more later).

As the shopkeeper, you find your 'till' isn't working so you'll need to add the total cost yourself!! Use your pencil and paper to work it out; will you need to use columns?

Make sure you play the role of the shopkeeper lots and lots so you're doing the adding up!!

English;

I am really looking forwards to you all joining me in class 3 in September. We are going to have great fun!

You may feel excited, you may feel a little worried (I promise you don't need to though) and you may have lots of questions.

Are there some questions you would like to ask my current class? I am sure they would love to answer them.

Please could you write a list of burning questions you would like to ask them and I will pass them onto class 3 so they can reply via your class blog. Make sure you use your best handwriting and punctuation and perhaps even create a colourful border if you like!

D.T.

Mum and Dad must have been very busy over the last few months!! Would you like to help them prepare either lunch or tea? You could help prepare the food, set the table and even make an eye-catching menu. You could even pretend to be the waiter or waitress and serve everyone their meal too.

Man cooking illustration, Cooking Child Baking, Cooking s For Kids ...

I really hope you all have a great day and have fun trying the activities above! Do let me know how it goes and please send me some photos too; please use the class 3 email address so they will come directly to me.

class3@netherthongprimary.co.uk

Thank you so much everyone!

Take care and have fun!

admin on: Class 2

Good morning my lovely Year 2 class, how was your weekend? I hope you had a nice time. We had a quiet one, but I did harvest some of my vegetables and made a lovely lunch…

The quiche has spinach from the veg plot and the salad, potatoes and peas are from there too! I can’t quite believe I’ve managed to grow so much as I’ve never been successful in the past. I really think that growing things has helped me to relax in these strange times. What activities have helped you over the last 3 months?

So the suggested schedule for today is as follows...

E.R.I.C. - Everybody Reading in Class for 20 mins

Active time - Joe Wicks is on today or try ‘Believer’ on Go Noodle

Maths/Literacy - do this in batches of 20 mins each, build in breaks.

LO: : column addition 2-digits add 2-digits no re-grouping

  • 108 + 10 = ?
  • Partition 12 in 3 different ways.
  • 35 - 7 = ?
  • 120 ÷ 10 =
  • What number is 9 more than 36?
  • Make £2 with 3 coins

Here we have the numbers 23 and 35. Think about how you would add these numbers together…

You could add the tens to make 50 and the ones to make 8 and then slap them together to make 58. Did you think of this way? Good.

Today we’re going to look at a new way of adding two two-digit numbers together by using the ‘column addition’ method.

With this method, it is important that you set your work out really neatly and ensure your numbers are in the correct place value.

There are a few rules with column addition – if you follow them, you’ll be flying! Here goes…

1)       Set your numbers out in the correct place value like so…

2)      Start from the right hand side – so in our case the ‘ones’ column. Add the ones up and put the total underneath, like this…

3)      Now add the ‘tens’ column up and put the number underneath.

Now try this one: 17 + 41 =

Use the column method, check your answer using partitioning (10 + 40 and 7 + 1).

Now try these:

  • 24 + 43
  • 52 + 17
  • 81 + 15
  • 34 + 44
  • 76 + 23

English

Here are this week’s spellings:

capital

animal

crystal

magical

tropical

festival

sandal

As usual you will find them on Spelling Shed and the transcript for Spelling Planet is here to download.

This week we are going to look at a wonderful Australian author and illustrator – Shaun Tan. You may have come across some of his work before. I really like his unusual, intricate drawings and that some of his books are just pictures, so that you can tell your own story from them.

Today I’d like you to explore Shaun’s website at:

http://www.shauntan.net/about.html

You can have look at all his links but I’d like you to focus on the 'about me' section in order to answer these questions:

  1. Where did Shaun Tan grow up?
  2. What degree did he gain?
  3. In what city does he work now?
  4. Name three of Shaun’s books.
  5. Which Pixar film did Shaun work on?
  6. What award did Shaun win in 2011?

I hope you enjoy finding out about Shaun Tan!

Geography

LO: To explore the physical features and landscapes of Australia.

Do you remember talking about what a physical feature is when we did our Arctic topic? Can you remember what it is? A physical feature is a landmark made by nature and not by humans. Can  you think of the physical features you have seen where you live?

Look through this week’s presentation with your adult. Then see how much you can remember by completing this activity:

Stay safe and enjoy your day! Remember Mrs Matthews will be on the blog tomorrow.
