Good morning everyone!

Thank you so much for all your superb work this week; I am overwhelmed with how hard you've all been working. Thank you so much for sending all your wonderful photos; they're all brilliant! I'll post them a little later this morning so do keep checking the blog!

Here are your activities for today....

P.E. Have a go at yoga again if you can; it's  great start to the day!

Reading; Spend some special time reading aloud to Mum or Dad or try the comprehension below....

Literacy;

Grammar 1st! Can you add the apostrophe to the correct place in my sentence?

Here's a tip...

If the sentence is about something belonging to someone the apostrophe comes before the 's' but if it's something belonging to more than one person it comes after the 's'. Don't forget, in a contraction the apostrophe replaces a missing letter.

  1. Ive forgotten my umbrella so Im going to get wet this morning.
  2. Toms coat is soaking.
  3. I went to Grandmas house to deliver shopping.
  4. All the players football boots are muddy.
  5. The teams colours are blue and white.
  6. The boys changing room is on the left and the girls is on the right.

Main activity;

Work with an adult to use 'google maps' and have another look at the photos of Mousehole on the internet.

Can you write a list of any of the interesting features you notice that are different to Holmfirth (this could be physical features or human features, eg tourist attractions, shops etc). How many differences can you find? Are there any similarities?

Maths

Today I'd like you to complete 2 activites on Mathletics; I've set these for you; 'Tallies' and 'Interpreting Tables'.

Can you also keep trying 'Time Tables Rockstars' - it will be brilliant if you can learn as many times tables as you can before you begin Year 4.

Science

I've got another investigation for you today. Your challenge is to find out what happens to the length of a shadow when the distance between the object and the light source changes.

You could make a cardboard shape or figure to use as your object creating a shadow or you could use an object in your home. Remember though that it will need to be opaque so light doesn't travel through it. You will need to place your torch at measured distances from the object and record how long the shadow is at each of the distances eg 10cm, 20cm, 30cm etc. Use a table to record the distance of your torch from the object and the resulting length of your shadow at each distance.

Remember to make a prediction and then see if your results match your prediction!

You will need;

Your object to create the shadow

A ruler

A torch

Paper and pencil

Have fun and do send me some photos!

Have a lovely weekend!

See you all soon,

Mrs Matthews

Morning all!

I can't believe it's Thursday already!!

Thank you for all your fabulous hard work this week; your photos have been great too! I'll post those a little later......first, here's our jobs for Thursday!

Yoga;

Let's begin the day with some relaxing yoga! I tried the 'Frozen' one yesterday, but here's a 'Minecraft Yoga' I thought you might like!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02E1468SdHg

Reading;

Please could you either continue with your Purple Mash reading OR try the mini comprehension below....

Maths:

8 questions;

  1. 560 divided by 10
  2. 4500 divided by 10
  3. 3200 divided by 100
  4. 56 x 10
  5. 380 x 10
  6. 23 x 100
  7. 516 divided by 3 (use bus stop!)
  8. 942 divided by 3 (use bus stop)

Problem;

If I had 120 netballs in the P.E. store and needed to sort them into bags of 10, how many bags would I need?

Activity;

Let's do some more work on frequency tables; a nice easy job for you today!!

Please can you complete B OR C

Literacy;

Please can you finish your Coronavirus leaflet if you didn't get chance yesterday.

Today I'd really like you to have a big handwriting practice as so many of you seem to have forgotten how brilliant you are at joined writing!!

Here's a sheet for you to complete in your very, very best handwriting!

Last, but not least.....

Art;

As we are focusing on comparing other locations with ours, please could you create a wonderful piece of artwork; a colourful landscape that includes Castle Hill. If it's rainy perhaps you could take a photo on a walk and then use this to copy- again send me a photo with both the photo and your artwork on.

I can't wait to see your completed landscapes!

That's all folks!

Enjoy your day and keep in touch!

Home learning Wednesday 10th June

admin on: Class 3

Hello again everyone!

Let's begin with a lovely photo Grace and her Mum sent yesterday;

Here's Grace enjoying her maths! Well done Grace!

Wednesday's activities;

French

We have learnt lots of colours and the names of animals in French. Here are some examples;

bleu.....blue

rouge....red

rose.....pink

noir....black

gris....grey

jaune....yellow

vert.....green

cochon......pig

tortue....tortoise

chien....dog

chat....cat

souris....mouse

serpent....snake

Today, I would like you to write 6 sentences; giving your opinion on a colour or an animal;

eg J'adore les chiens....................I like dogs.

J'adore les tortues.............I like tortoises.

Je deteste le gris..........I don't like the colour grey

Have a go yourself, using 'J'adore...' or 'Je deteste...'

Notice the 'le' or 'les' that you need to use ('le' before the colour or 'les' before the animals).

Maths;

8 questions

Here are some times tables AND some x10, x100 etc. What happens to the zeros as the digits move along the column?!

  1. 6 x 4
  2. 8 x 3
  3. 28 x 10
  4. 54 x 100
  5. 560 divided by 10
  6. 900 divided by 100
  7. 47 x 100
  8. 320 x 10

Problem; 32 bags of oranges arrived in school today with 10 in each bag. Also 5 bags of apples with 7 in each came too. How much fruit arrived altogether?

Today I'd like you to create your own frequency chart; it could be about favourite fruits, pets or board games, for example, it's up to you. You would need to ask lots of family and friends. Here's an example;

Literacy;

Yesterday you shared an information text with Mum or Dad (Coronavirus; A Book for Children).

Today I'd really like you to create an information leaflet all about Coronavirus. In years to come other people may not know everything we have learnt about it. As it's a non-fiction text, you will need a heading and then sub-headings and will be writing paragraphs of information. Have fun and make it as interesting and as colourful as you can. You can create it by hand or use my 2Do on Purple Mash if you prefer.

https://www.purplemash.com/#app/leaflets/blank_leaflet

Reading;

Make sure you read aloud to an adult again; you could finish the Purple Mash reading you were doing yesterday if you like.

Geography;

There is no rush to complete this today as I know I have asked lots of you today but here's something I'd like you to be doing when you can (sometime before next week).

We are going to be comparing Holmfirth to other places in the UK. This week I'd like you to use 'google maps' to have a look at a place called 'Mousehole' in Cornwall. Have a good look around! You could also search on the internet with an adult to find images of Mousehole as well as images of Holmfirth and print them out or save them in a document. Can you see any differences in the landscape?

Have lots of fun and enjoy your day!

I miss you all lots! Here's a big virtual whole class hug!!

See you soon,

Mrs Matthews

admin on: Class 3

Good morning fabulous year 3!

Thank you so much for all your super photos once again; I'm so proud of you for working so hard and so enthusiastically. I love to see your photos and post them on our blog for you!

Here are a few of the latest photos...

Chloe posting her letter!

Arianna's happy place!

Jack working hard on his maths!

Alfie's maths; learning about turns and directions!

Here are Max and Mia enjoying their maths too!

Here are today's activities;

Literacy;

Today's activity is a lovely activity to share with an adult. I'd like you to sit with Mum or Dad and share the information book about Covid-19. It's a great book that explains all about the virus in an easily understandable way. Later in the week I'd like you to have a go at writing your own information leaflet so see how much information you can find out today.

You might decide to write down a few key facts that you think would be good in your own leaflet; today perhaps just decide on some simple sub-headings or key words you might want to include.

Here's a link to the book -'Coronavirus- a Book for Children'....

https://nosycrow.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Coronavirus-A-Book-for-Children.pdf

Maths;

Here are your 8 questions;

  1. 672 - 227
  2. 542 - 128
  3. Subtract 40 from 382
  4. 50 less than 582
  5. Take away 328 from 772
  6. Subtract 200 from 765
  7. 992 - 248
  8. 727 - 253

Problem; If I was facing North and made 3 quarter turns clockwise, where would I be facing?

Activity;

We practised turns and directions yesterday. If you found this tricky do keep practising practically!

Here's an activity I'd like you to try- choose A or B (only select C if you would normally do so).

I bet you'll be really good at this activity because of all your practising yesterday!

Use your toy figure to help you if it helps too.

Enjoy!

Mrs Matthews

Here are a few tasks from Miss Hemingway too!

Hello everyone, Miss H here too! Here are some activities for computing and music:

Computing and music;

We were meant to be starting our new computing topic but when I logged onto PurpleMash, I saw they had creating something quite incredible! They have created a music programme where you can make your own piece of electronic music. I would like you to have a go at composing your own piece of electronic music! I can’t wait to boogie on down to them …

PSHE;

I did this activity with year 2 and they loved it so have a go at this ...

Have a read through this story called Odd Socks.

Everyone has differences that we can and cannot see but does that mean we should treat them differently? Discuss this with people at home.

I would like you to create a mind map of qualities that make you different from other people. Here is what makes me different from other people …

You should be proud of your differences and make sure that we respect everyone’s differences and treat everyone equally. Our differences are what make us unique and special and should treasure these!

Have fun and enjoy your day!

Please do get in touch with me via our class3@netherthongprimary.co.uk email if you need any further help at all and please let me know how things are going. Keep sending those lovely photos.

See you all soon!

Home learning Monday 8th June

admin on: Class 3

Good morning all!

I can't believe it's Monday again! Where does the time go?

Thank you once again for all your lovely photos and hard work last week. I realize many of you are beginning to find working from home very tricky; please keep going though, it will be of great benefit when you do return to school. Please send me a quick message once a week or some photos to let me know how you are doing too.

Here are a few of the latest pictures I have. Keep them coming!!

Mia's brilliant board game review!

Alfie having break from his work to help Dad at his!! Great job Alfie and a lovely smile too!!

Finally, here's Austin posting his letter to his Auntie in Scotland.

Here's today's activities.......

P.E. It's entirely up to you whether you join Joe Wicks, try some yoga or create your own circuit training course around the house!! Can you think of an exercise to do in every room and decide how many repetitions of that exercise everyone has to do (either 5, 10 or 15 perhaps)? Everyone in the family could have a go and you could time how long the course takes them!! Who does it the quickest?

Literacy; (grammar)

Today have a look at the Schofield and Sims activity on page 34; 'Paragraphs: non-fiction'. Look at the instructions and guidance with an adult and then have a go. Non-fiction paragraphs often use sub-headings so the activity is allowing you to practise this. This will help you for an activity later in the week.

Take your time, keep your writing joined and as neat as you can! Don't forget your fabulous punctuation too!

Reading:

Today I'd really like you to revisit the text you were looking at on Purple Mash. Most of you were reading 'Sleeping Volcanoes' in the Emeralds collection; please can you read chapter 3 and the multiple choice questions to follow. I've created a 2Do for you.

https://www.purplemash.com/#tab/pm-home/serialmash

If you chose a different text, please read the next chapter.

**If 'Sleeping Volcanoes' has proved too difficult for your child there are easier texts in 'Fire Bolts'; I have created a 2Do on Purple Mash for the 'Red 5-A-Side' text book 1, chapter 1 OR  your child may prefer the 'White Star Chronicle' book 1, chapter 1 (again I have created a 2Do if your child prefers this one). There are no questions for these texts so please do ask your child lots of questions afterwards; testing their comprehension!!

Choose just one of the texts above.

Maths:

8 questions;

1. 345 – 30

2. 40 more than 352

3. Subtract 127 from 683

4. Take 50 from 398

5. 567 x 10

6. 673 divided by 10

7. 84 x 4

8. 328 divided by 4

Rather than a problem today, please can you have a go at Times Tables Rockstars; keep practising as it does get easier!

Activity;

L.O. To understand instructions involving turns and directions. To also understand a quarter turn is a right angle.

Main;

Take a large piece of paper or card and using a ruler and felt pen draw a large cross on the paper, creating 4 quarters. Can you label each angle as a right angle. Now use a different coloured felt pen and label the end of each line with North, South, East and West. Stand a toy figure in the centre of the cross facing North.

You may want to practise making quarter turns clockwise or anti-clockwise yourself first and perhaps drawing a clockwise and anti-clockwise arrow will help too!

Now follow these instructions and tell me which way the toy is facing after each instruction....

  1. Make 2 quarter turns clockwise.......
  2. Make 1 quarter turn clockwise...
  3. Make 3 quarter turns clockwise....
  4. Make 1 quarter turn anti-clockwise....
  5. Make 3 quarter turns anti-clockwise....
  6. Make 2 quarter turns anti-clockwise...
  7. Make 4 quarter turns clockwise....
  8. How many right angles in 3 turns?
  9. What does 2 quarter turns make? Try it with your toy (ie a full turn, a half turn or a quarter turn?)
  10. What does 4 quarter turns make? Try it with your toy.

Have fun practising yourself! Ask Mum or Dad to give you instructions.

Well that's all folks!!

Enjoy the day and cross your fingers for sun later in the week.

Please email me to let me know how you are getting on and please do encourage your child to try the activities or let me know if you're struggling as I'm here to help.

Thanks so very much,

Mrs Matthews
