Homework 3rd April 2020

admin on: Class 2

Well that's the Spring Term finished, and we've learned so much, haven't we? I've loved teaching you all about the Great Fire of London. Your progress has been immense! I've been doing a fair bit of number crunching and everybody has made massive improvements in their maths scores since January - I'm so proud of you all. Thank you for embracing the remote learning over the last two weeks. Your emails and pictures have really kept me so positive. Here are just a few of them from this week...

I've had some amazing Great Fire of London traditional tales emailed to me so far. Remember to email me yours at class2@netherthongprimary.co.uk  I aim to make them into a virtual book and share them with you after the Easter break.

So homework for the holidays is an Easter reading challenge: You can download a copy and get reading! Try to use a different book for each challenge. You can send your entries to the class 2 email and I will be awarding certificates and prizes after the holidays. My other homework is to stay at home, stay safe, think about writing a letter to a friend or relative and ensure you have a good rest, ready for more remote learning in two weeks! Don't forget the Lego challenge Mrs Barker which will be available on the school blog everyday during the holidays!

Have an amazing Easter! Keep smiling!

Lots of love

Remote Learning Friday 3rd April

admin on: Class 2

It's the last day before we break up for the Easter holidays! It sounds rather strange saying that, doesn't it? I'll still be checking the class2@netherthongprimary.co.uk email during the next two weeks, so please feel free to email me. I'm hoping that we can pitch the tent in the garden and have a campfire tea one night in the holidays. I'll also try to organise an Easter egg hunt. I aim to send my Easter cards to friends and family and perhaps write a little more than I usually do. I'm going to keep up my running too, I've challenged myself to the 'Keep up the 5k Challenge', which means I need to complete 13 x 5km runs before the 30th of April, I'm currently 62% of the way there. What plans do you have? Let me know.

So the schedule for the last day is as follows...

E.R.I.C. - Everybody Reading in Class for 20 mins (remember to record your reading in your reading record)

Active time - Joe Wicks is showing a PE lesson at 9am (Are you liking the George Ezra music now?)

Maths/Literacy - do this in batches of 20 mins each, build in breaks.

Maths

LO: Review of the term

I've set you two assessment tasks on Mathletics.

I would really like everyone to have a good go at these - one is the arithmetic paper, a little like our 6 questions and the second challenge is the reasoning paper. You may wish to have a pencil and paper with you too, so that you can jot down any workings you might need to do. I've put this onto Mathletics for a week - so if you can't do everything today, you can complete them another day.

Literacy

So the day has arrived to actually write your traditional tale based on The Great Fire of London! I'm so excited about this activity, we are going to complete it at home too. Now using your plan from this week, you need to write the whole story. You need to think about all the things we remind ourselves of in class:

Full stops and capital letters.

Using the four sentence types.

Using exciting words and adjectives to describe.

Can you use speech and punctuate it correctly?

Beautiful presentation, concentrating on letter size.

Ensure you connect your sentences with conjunctions like: because, when, so, if.

And spelling those common exception words correctly.

If you're stuck starting off your story, you can use the story start below and finish it for me. If you would like to type your story, then that would be fine. Please can you all email me your stories to class2@netherthongprimary.co.uk and I will include these in your portfolio.

Once upon a time there was a poor boy called Jack. He lived on the streets of London as his mother and father had died in the Plague in 1665. Jack was a good boy and always tried to help people if he could. One day he was strolling along Pudding Lane when he smelt smoke...

I look forward to reading your stories!!

Art

The boys and I completed an Easter bunny art project this week: Can you guess which one is Ed's, which is Will's and which is mine?

Perhaps you could have a go too? Here's the blank version for you to download.

Here is the challenge from Miss H for today! From Monday, all challenges are going to be posted on the school blog. Miss H will still post the creations that get sent to us. Remember to email us your creations! Here is the tower I made at my Grandma's house, can you beat it? If you don't have Lego, don't worry any construction material will do …

Have an egg-cellent Easter, missing you all so much!

Remote Learning Thursday 2nd April 2020

admin on: Class 2

Good morning, Miss H here again!

You are all working so hard. I have been doing a lot of baking with my Grandma and Mum recently which we have all found to be very therapeutic and tasty! Also, I found an app where you can colour by numbers. When we are colouring, time floats away and the mandalas are especially relaxing to sit and colour. Here's the suggested timetable for today:

E.R.I.C. - Everybody Reading in Class for 20mins (remember to record your reading in your reading record)

Active time - Joe Wicks is showing guiding a PE lesson at 9am (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ)

PSHE

Break – (why don’t you try baking something as a treat to cheer someone up?)

PE

Computing

Fun activity – With everyone at home, take it in turns to close your eyes (or use a blind fold) to draw an elephant. What will yours look like? Here is mine, my Grandma’s and Mrs Hemingway’s attempt …

Science

Linking with our topic on the uses of everyday materials, can you find the best material to help protect Humpty Dumpty? What materials can you find at home?

What you will need:

  • Boiled eggs
  • Ziploc bags or something similar
  • Materials to test – what can you find at home? Cotton wool, rice, bubble wrap. You will need 5 in total.

Place your materials to test in a Ziploc bag, add the egg and make sure it’s completely covered by the test material. Hold the bag at the top as high as you can and drop the bag. Check the egg for damage. Repeat for each material, if the egg cracks use a new egg for the next test.

Variables to keep constant:

  • Height to drop the egg
  • Force at which to drop the egg. I would advise using the same person to hold the bag as high as they could and then drop without using any added force. This means the height and force should be the same for each egg.
  • Amount of material to test – this is a tricky one. We drew a line on the bag and filled to the same height with each material, there are some issues with this as the bubble wrap had more air gaps than the other two materials.
  • Placement of the egg – if the egg was on the bottom of the bag it wouldn’t be cushioned so try to make sure the egg is in the middle of the material being tested.
  • Surface on which to drop the egg – this should be the same.

Write an explanation of what you have done. Can you record your results in a table in your yellow books? An example is here.

PSHE

Pass a smile around your family. Now tell each member of your family something you admire or particularly like about them. Can they tell you something positive about you? I know there’ll be too many positive things to say all at once so you could write them all down first before you say it out loud!

P.E.

Keeping with the football focus from last week, can you make a goal and practise aiming. If it is too easy, put an object in the way (Or a grown up!) so you have to aim around it. How many shots on target can you make in a row? Can you set up a competition in your house to see who can get the most?

Computing

On Purplemash, can you make a picture on 2Calculate by colouring in certain squares? A flower? A pirate? An elephant? Remember to take a picture and send it in so I can look at your amazing work! Here is mine that I did …

Here is the Lego challenge for today! Remember to email me your creations! If you don’t have Lego, don’t worry any construction material will do …

Keep Smiling and stay safe!
