Good morning Class 2! Well today is the day! Netherthong Race for Life! I’m in school and I’m going to be busy working this morning, but I know that I’ll be thinking about this afternoon. Thank you to everyone who has sponsored this event so far and good luck to everyone who has designed their own Race for Life – just knowing that you are with me in spirit will help me to carry on this afternoon.

So the suggested schedule for today is as follows...

E.R.I.C. - Everybody Reading in Class for 20 mins

Active time - Joe Wicks is showing a PE lesson at 9am or Go Noodle

Maths/Literacy - do this in batches of 20 mins each, build in breaks.

Maths

LO: Find fractions of amounts

  • 85 + 37 =
  • 27 – ? = 9
  • £1 – 68p =
  • 60 ÷ 5 =
  • Write fifty-five in digits.
  • Partition 356 into 100s, 10s and 1s.

Look at this number sentence: ¼ of 12 = ? To find ¼ of a number, we can halve and halve again to split the number into 4 equal parts. Look at 1/3 of 12; what does this mean? This time we need to split 12 into 3 equal groups…

Now have a go at these…

English

Here’s today’s Litz Blitz…

1) What type of word is underlined:

We raised lots of money for Cancer Research

2) Write in the 3 missing capital:

today is tuesday, and tomorrow is wednesday.

3) Which word means to do something well:

accomplish      accompany       accommodate

4) Fill in the missing word:

Simon went  _________ the road.

5) Make the contraction for they are

Have a go at this sentence game today… http://www.scootle.edu.au/ec/viewing/L8741/index.html#

It should really help you to think about how we can ‘build’ sentences and make them more interesting.

Then I’d like you to go back to our class story from yesterday and add some more. The children that had a go yesterday were brilliant! It was so lovely to see all your names there. Let’s keep going with that – remember to read everything that goes before your part and we are writing in the ‘past tense’ – so your verbs might need ‘ed’ at the end! Don't rush the story, ensure you have lots of description to paint pictures in your readers' minds.

Music

How did you get on with your accompaniments last week? We are going to keep with the theme of using objects from around your house as instruments and compose your very own seaside soundscape. A soundscape is where you use different sounds to bring a scene or image to life. This week I would like you to create a graphic score of what your composition is going to look like. Here is an example of what a graphic score is to remind you.

Here is a blank score for you to use. Think about what you could use to represent the sea, birds, people chattering and laughing, anything you normally hear at a seaside. Here is a YouTube clip of sounds you hear at the seaside to give you some inspiration.

PE

How did you get on last week with the blindfolds? Any bumped knees? This week, I would like you to do the same but after you have plotted your course, you be the person that is blindfolded! You will need to write some clear instructions for the person directing you to use! Good luck …

Have a wonderful day! Keep smiling and keep sending me your emails - we just love reading them!

Race for Life

admin on: Class 2

So the Netherthong Race for Life is tomorrow at 1pm! I know so many of you have organised your own event in your gardens and surrounding areas. We have had so much support through the fundraising link, we are now at around 75% of our £1000 target. Please keep sharing this link so that we can reach our goal.

If you take any photos or videos of your event, please email them to class2@netherthongprimary.co.uk  If you send in your pictures, we will automatically presume you give us permission to use on the website and other sites associated with Cancer Research. I hope to put some kind of montage together when I recover from running around the playground! This will be a wonderful whole school collaboration at a time when we can’t be together. Good luck – knowing that you are all there will spur me on, I’m sure!

Happy running!

Remote Learning Monday 11th May 2020

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you enjoyed the extended weekend and had some nice V.E. Day celebrations. The weather has been lovely and we really enjoyed a little afternoon tea in the garden on Friday...

Maths

LO: Solve missing number multiplications and divisions, and word problems.

  • 72 + 23 =
  • 40 - 18 =
  • £1 – 55p =
  • 20 ÷ 5 =
  • Write forty in digits.
  • Partition 222 into 100s, 10s and 1s

How could yo work out □ x 5 = 20 ? Talk to you adult about how you would do this problem. Do you agree that it is asking us how many 5s are in 20? If you can’t remember the answer, then count up in 5s. We could use the inverse and rewrite the question like this:  20 ÷ 5 = □

What numbers could go in these boxes: □ x □ = 10 ?

Read this problem with your adult:

Mr Kershaw has 30 children in his class. They all need new pencils. There are 10 pencils in a box. How many boxes does he need?

Discuss the problem and then solve. Now have a go at these...

Thank you to so many of you for sending in your Mousehole Cat story boards, they were amazing. Jackson and his mum, worked hard on this one...

If you didn't get chance to complete yours, then I'm sure Jackson wouldn't mind you 'magpie-ing' for his version here! So today I would like us to start writing the story of the Mousehole Cat in our own words. You can use your story maps to help you to remember the order of events. Now I would like to do this as a whole class story! "But how can we do this from our homes?" I hear you all cry! I'd like us to try something new today. I've set up a 'padlet' which is like a virtual piece of paper that we can all get to and all write on! If you click on the link below, you will be sent to a new window. Hopefully, you will see that I have started the story for you. If you double click on the piece of paper or click the 'plus' button, you can begin to type. In the title part, I'd like you to put your name, then we can see who has contributed. You need to write the next sentence or sentences in the story. You can use some of the work from your description and your blurb to help you. Don't write too much - just one or two sentences, then someone else can carry on from where you left off. It's important that you read what other people have written so we don't repeat the same part of the story (this will be underneath in separate boxes). I'm looking for some great sentence starts (why don't you use the ABC technique to help you?) and some fabulous description using adjectives. I will keep checking the padlet throughout the day and see how you are getting on - hopefully, everyone who is on the blog will have a go at this, but not necessarily at the same time! This is the first time I've done this, so there is room for error, we'll see how it goes!

Padlet - The Mousehole Cat

History

Go through these information slides about why seaside holidays started becoming popular in Victorian times. What can you see in these pictures? Now have a go at these activities, there's a wordsearch and a postcard detective sheet to complete. Enjoy!

Take care!

Friday 8th May 2020 - V.E. Day Celebrations

admin on: Class 2

Today is V.E. Day remembrance day, this is a significant anniversary of V.E. Day and many celebrations had been planned across the country to recognise the heroic actions and sacrifices made by people at the time. So today, we’re a little ‘off timetable’ as it’s a bank holiday and here are some activities that you might want try at home, and maybe you could have your own celebration for V.E. Day!

Have a look at this video clip and have a go at answering the questions:

  1. How long did World War II last?
  2. What does V.E. stand for and can you work out what anniversary we are celebrating this year?
  3. Who appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to celebrate with the people?
  4. How did the British people celebrate V.E. Day?
  5. How long after the war did rationing continue?

Have a look at this photo and talk to your adult about what you can see:

  • What are people wearing?
  • What can be seen at the back of the photo?
  • Why can we not see many men there?
  • Do people look happy or sad?
  • What sort of street is the party on?
  • Is there evidence of food or music?

Other activities that you might like to do today…

  • Design a medal for the returning heroes
  • There will be a moment of silence at 11am to mark the sacrifice made by those who served during the war, why not join in?
  • Have a look at this information from English Heritage – you can make special wartime recipes or even learn to swing dance!
  • Make some bunting to decorate your house, you can find a template here
  • On your daily walk today, could you visit the war memorial?
  • At 3pm, people are also being invited to take to their doorsteps to raise a glass and clap during The Nation's Toast to the Heroes of World War Two.

However you celebrate, let me know by sending in your photos!

Enjoy the bank holiday weekend. See you here on Monday!
