admin on: Class 3

Dear all!

Thank you so much everyone for all your amazing hard work this week. I have been overwhelmed with all your lovely messages and fabulous photos of yourselves and your wonderful work. I'm so proud of you all. Remember to say an enormous thank you to your Mum, Dad, Gran or Grandad or whoever has supported you with your work. They really do deserve a medal (so do you)!!!

I will upload some of your photos as soon as I am able; the system seems a little overloaded at the moment and won't allow it!! How frustrating!! I'll try again later!

Have a wonderful weekend; relax and enjoy just being together and have lots of fun!

Will tune in once again, bright and early Monday morning!!

Sending an air hug to you all!

Friday 27th March 2020

admin on: Class 3

Good morning all!

Hope you are all keeping fit and well and enjoying the wonderful sun!

A massive thank you to you all (adults and children) for all the exceptionally hard work you have been doing. I realize that trying to juggle tackling lots of school tasks, working from home yourself or even going into work at the same time as trying to enjoy quality family time must be very stressful. I'm trying to keep the activities as practical as possible, but I totally understand that for many of you there may be far too much work. Please don't feel stressed about this as I totally understand and am keen to be flexible and respond to your needs. If you are finding it difficult to cope with the work, perhaps each day select the tasks you think you and your child will be able to complete together and save the others for another time. Try and select a variety though so that you can cover each area of learning. It's a very stressful and strange time for everyone at the moment and I certainly don't want to add to your stress. Please don't hesitate to email me on class3@netherthongprimary.co.uk if you wish to discuss how things are going for you and your child.

Here are the suggested activities for today;

Maths:

Begin with 'timestables rockstars'- keep having a go as it will get easier. If you are struggling to access the site and are using the app, it is suggested that you delete the app and try again. Any problems, please let me know.

8 questions (5 minutes);

  1. 1/2 of 484
  2. 1/3 of 999
  3. 876 + 19
  4. 962 - 29
  5. 670 divided by 10
  6. 2/9 + 6/9
  7. What time is it now?
  8. What time will it be in 2 hours?

Problem;

If Amelia made 36 beautifully decorated buns and shared them out between 3 of her friends, how many would they each get? (Remember to decide if it's an addition, a subtraction, multiplication or division).

Activity;

Can you remember how we calculated perimeters? We added the total length of each of the sides of the shape.

In your pack you will find the activity 'Measurement-Review 2' pg 101- please could you complete just questions 1-10

Alternatively, find 10 flat objects to measure the perimeter of!! You could choose eg a place mat, a coaster (square or rectangular for example, as we've not yet covered circumference)!! Carefully measure with your ruler in cm and mm.

Extension if needed; Please continue with further questions included on the sheet if you need to.

P.E. Now here's the fun part!!!!

Build an assault course in the garden or inside and time yourselves completing it!!

Alternatively, you could do a different exercise in each room and again time yourselves. Who completes the course the fastest?!!!

Examples;

  1. 10 x up and downstairs (don't fall)
  2. 20 star jumps in the kitchen
  3. 15 squats in the garden
  4. 10 'bench presses' against the bath!!
  5. 15 sit-ups in the lounge.

Literacy;

'Into the forest'- Role play

Listen to the story once again via YouTube (wish I could read it to you all again)! Now re-tell the story to another family member.  Would you like to try some role play? You'll need 2 people in your family to join in with you!! We love role play in year 3 don't we?! I certainly do!!!

Please could you re-enact the conversations the little boy has in the forest; ie with 'Jack', 'Goldilocks' and then 'Hansel and Gretel'.

Have fun!! Are there any props you need? You may need a basket for example. A cow would be tricky, but see what you can do!!

Science;

L.O. To investigate the way water is transported within plants

Please can you begin by trying two simple games on Purplemash. The children have used Purplemash in class before and so should be used to the site. It really is very simple to navigate.

Please try the following 2 activities; locate via 'homepage' (top of 1st screen)-'science'-'plants'-'2DIY' then select.......

  1. 'Plants labelling'
  2. 'Transpiration'        NB The children could save their work or perhaps print it out if they like.

Can you predict what will happen if you put white cut carnations in COLOURED water? Write the learning objective and your prediction. If you are able to find some white carnations whilst out shopping for food you may wish to buy some to try the experiment! Alternatively, watch it on YouTube!

Draw and label the carnations in the coloured water if you were able to get some (no pressure at all).

Let's see what happens.

NB Next Friday I aim to suggest the children plant a sunflower seed so if you happen to see any in the supermarket whilst shopping for food, please pick some up. It's a shame you can't buy one at a time! If we were at school I would have supplied them (so frustrating)! Don't worry if you can't get hold of any- planting beans or other vegetables would be good too. Anything you could grow would be brilliant!

I hope that's not too many activities for today. Any feedback on the work set would be gratefully received!!

Please continue to send me photos of any work or activities that you do. Perhaps you may wish to photograph your role play, or your assault course. Please keep them coming; they're just great to see!

Here is something from Miss Hemingway ...

Miss you all!

Thank you once again everyone for all your amazing hard work!

Day 4 Thursday 26.3.20

admin on: Class 3

Good morning everyone!

Hope you are all enjoying having some lovely family time together; the weather is certainly being kind to us all. Phew!!!

Thank you so much for all your fabulous hard work at home; I do realize it must be very tricky motivating the children to work at home so I will try my best to keep as many activities as I can fun and practical. If you're struggling to motivate your child do let me know and I'll try and help as much as I can with tips!! Perhaps some children may feel more excited about completing tasks if they create their own special simple tent or den using just chairs and large sheets or blankets in the garden or inside. It's amazing what a couple of chairs and a blanket can do!! They could add a snuggly rug or blanket, a tray to work on and stationary!! Others might need a quiet work station inside the house. If you need any tips on motivation do let me know; I have a few I use!!! Short bouts of work is likely to work much better than long sessions too.

09.00 Reading

Please try a second comprehension this morning. Here's an example of one of the shorter ones. However, if your child needs a longer one there are plenty in the pack. There is also a selection of comprehensions on the 'twinkl' site. I sent the link on my most recent blog.

09.40 Maths;

L.O. To recap measuring.

8 questions;

  1. £2.34 + 27p
  2. £5. 28 + £1.35
  3. 1/3 of 15
  4. 345 + 30
  5. 678 - 40
  6. 55 x 3
  7. 4/7 + 2/7
  8. What time is it?

Problem;

If Max bought a hamster that cost £5.35 and a new hamster wheel that cost £2.25 how much would he have spent?

Can you work out how much change he would have from £10.00? (extension)

PRACTICAL ACTIVITY!!

  1. If you have a ruler at home please have a good look at it to familiarize yourself with the cm and mm markings. Can you find 5 things in the house or outdoors and measure their lengths? Please record your measurements in your pink book. Make a table to display your measurements clearly. Don't forget the ruler!!!
  2. Use some kitchen scales to weigh 5 items in grams. You may wish to bake and weigh the ingredients. See if you can persuade Mum/Dad to bake some tasty buns with you!! Again record your measurements.
  3. Do you have a measuring jug in the kitchen? Does it measure in ml? Can you fill a mug with water and then pour the water into the jug? What was the capacity of the cup? (ie how much water did it hold?). Try this with a dish, an empty tin can and a plastic milk carton, for example. Use other containers if these aren't available, eg an empty yoghurt pot.

11.00 Literacy

'Into the forest'

L.O. To write a short letter in the role of a character.

Did you manage to finish your 'Into the forest' story map? Can you now pretend you are the little boy in the story; you didn't follow Mum's instructions and you went through the forest. You met a strange boy with a cow, a cheeky little girl and 2 frightened children on your journey to Gran's. Please can your write a short letter to your friend 'Little Red Riding Hood' to tell her all about your day!!! Can you write this in your pink book? Please send me an image of your letter; I'd love to read it.

Can't wait to read your letters!

13.00 Mathletics; spend some time completing this week's 'Mathletics' activities. Try some others too if you wish!

13.30 French; have a look at this fantastic site; 'Duolingo.com'. If you create a profile, select 'French' and try the 'basics 1' you can try mini sessions as often as you wish. There are images to help so it's very popular and great fun. You will be surprised how much French you learn.

14.30 Handwriting; I have put some handwriting sheets in your pack. Select just one of the activities and neatly copy the words in your pink book. Take your time and remember to join!

Then please go outside and have great fun in the garden. You've certainly deserved it! Enjoy the gorgeous sunshine.

Take care everyone,

Mrs Matthews
