Week ending Friday 16th April

It's the first week of the Summer term and we've had snow, hail, frost and sunshine!

Everyone is very happy to be back in class and we've had a really fun week, the highlight obviously being the nth term in algebra - who doesn't love algebra?

We have been presenting our projects on Ancient Civilizations, which we did over the Easter break and then have gone on to write a non-chronological report on our individual civilization. We've had everything from the Indus Valley, to Babylonians, from Vikings, to Aborigines - it has all been very educational and Mrs Johnson and I have learnt a lot ourselves!

In Science, we have started to look at changing states, with an experiment over three days in dissolving.

Oil wouldn't dissolve, baking powder and Alka Selzer did and a lot of things made a new substance... such as cement...

Hopefully, we won't be needing that beaker again!

Flowers!

FONS worked with the businesses in Holmfirth and our school to create flowers, which have been displayed throughout the town. Year 6 took part in this and I think you'll all agree they look fantastic!

Another term is over! It's Easter and it's sunny... all good.

We have had a great week, finishing projects and celebrating.

We ended our Geography topic with a consolidation of world geography, using atlases, then to close the Jamaica investigation, we watched the excellent film, Cool Runnings - the story of the Jamaica bobsled team.

In English, we finished the Philip Pullman 'Clockwork' strand, with an opportunity for the class to write their own ending - before I revealed all.

Maths was a conclusion of the work so far and a frank discussion about areas that the class wish to return to in the Summer term. Lots to plan methinks...

And we finished the class story - Someday Angeline - my favourite book to read. Such a great, heart-warming, funny story.

Happy Easter, everyone.

Enjoy the holidays and stay safe.

Mr C, Mrs J, Miss H and the team.

Lots of work on angles and geometry this week to ensure everyone is happy with a protractor and can sort prisms one from the other.

We have been reading the book, Clockwork - a dark, gothic tale, which has us all hooked!
There have been lots of opportunities for art from this, some scarier than others!

We have been preparing to say goodbye to Mr Ladley, who leaves us this week. Based on his valentines gift at home during lockdown, we have all worked on the Banksy piece, 'Girl with a balloon' and compiled them all into a card.

We ended the week with yoga, following a PE lesson inventing games in groups.

Good luck Mr Ladley - we hope to see you again soon!

It has been so amazing to have all 32 children back in class this week!

The smiley faces have added to the spring optimism and together we have worked hard, read lots and laughed constantly.

Maths has been a geometric battle with compasses, rulers and protractors as we have created circles and triangles.

English has been poetic, with haikus and spring verse:

Geography has seen us in Jamaica, looking at tourism - dreaming of the sunshine!
In Science, Mr Ladley has been challenging the children to build stable towers, which can support weight - beginning with plans to scale:

And the week ended with a frenetic game of dodgeball!

It's so great to all be back!

Mr C, Mrs J and Mr L
