Buongiorno anno 6, signorina H qui!
Mr C will be happy because today we are in Italy! Italy is one of my favourite places to go and visit because of the beautiful scenery and delicious food! In Italy, people enjoy leisurely meals, taking time for cooking, eating and telling stories when sharing food with family and friends.
There were so many different Italian dishes to choose from that I am going to put the links to some other dishes on here so you can have a go at making them all but I am going to focus on a spaghetti bolognaise by Jamie Oliver …
Ingredients
- 2 free-range pork sausages
- olive oil
- 500 g lean beef mince
- 2 onions
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 1 large carrot
- 1 stick of celery
- 1 courgette
- 2 tablespoons thick balsamic vinegar
- 2 x 400 g tins of plum tomatoes
- 1 heaped teaspoon tomato purée
- 450 g dried spaghetti
- Parmesan cheese, to serve
Method
- Place a large shallow casserole pan on a medium-high heat. Squeeze the sausage meat out of the skins.
- Put 1 tablespoon of olive oil into the pan, with the mince and sausage meat, breaking everything up with a wooden spoon. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring regularly, while you prep your vegetables.
- Peel the onions and garlic, trim the carrots, celery and courgette. Coarsely grate all the veg on a box grater, finely grate the garlic, and stir it all into the pan.
- Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the vegetables are soft and sweet, stirring occasionally.
- Add the balsamic vinegar and the tinned tomatoes. Half fill each tin with water, swirl it around to pick up all the last bits of tomato and pour into the pan.
- Stir in the tomato purée and a pinch of black pepper. Mash everything up with your spoon, reduce to low and leave to cook for 2 to 3 hours, or until thick, glossy and reduced.
- About 15 minutes before you’re ready to serve, cook the pasta in a large pan of boiling salted water according to the packet instructions, then drain, reserving a mugful of starchy cooking water.
- Add the pasta to the sauce, stir in some of the reserved pasta water to help the sauce stick and mix well over the heat.
- Use tongs to divide between your bowls, then serve with a good grating of Parmesan cheese.
If you would like you have a go at making your own pasta, here is an easy pasta recipe.
Here are a few more Italian dishes for you to have a go at:
Why not finish your meal off with some gelato! In Italian Gelato means frozen and this typical Italian ice-cream comes in all colours and flavours and is usually served as balls in a wafer cone or cup. Here is a recipe for some gelato if you fancy trying it …
Ingredients
- 475ml milk
- 250ml double cream
- 4 egg yolks
- 100g sugar
Method
- In a medium saucepan, mix milk and cream. Warm until foam forms around the edges. Remove from heat.
- In a large bowl, beat the egg yolks and sugar until frothy. Gradually pour the warm milk into the egg yolks, whisking constantly. Return mixture to saucepan; cook over medium heat, stirring with a wooden spoon until the mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of the spoon. If small egg lumps begin to show, remove from heat immediately.
- Pour the mixture through a sieve into a bowl. Cover and chill for several hours or overnight.
- Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer's instructions. Transfer to a sealed container and freeze until firm. If the gelato is too firm, place it in the refrigerator until it reaches the desired consistency.
I hope you all have a wonderful day and Buon appetito!

Good morning year 6,
This weather is just awful. Try to keep smiling.
Maybe Jenga is the plan for today?
Georgie understands a bit more about the weather now:
The usual reading (maybe a little more today - looking out of the window) and exercise.

Good Morning!
I hope everyone is well.
Don't forget, we are getting together 1.30-2.30pm (weather permitting), next Wednesday - 15th July - on the school field.
This Thursday, we are going to be holding a school sports day.
Mrs Matthews will be sending information out, so that everyone can join in from home.
The usual reading and exercise please.
Today, I would like you to have a go at a topic.
One of the year 1 parents happened to mention to me that this summer was going to be wet - lots of rain. This is not good news - if he is correct?
So, how do we know?
I'd like you to research the weather. How do meteorologists make their predictions? How accurate are they? Does anyone check afterwards to see how successful different people are? Is BBC weather more trustworthy than the Met Office?
Write a report, based on your findings.
Finally, can you look into the weather for this summer? What is it going to be like? Will it be different in Yorkshire to Wales? Scotland? Cornwall?
I look forward to your findings.
Fingers crossed you have some good news.
Have a lovely day

Good Morning,
I hope you have had a lovely weekend.
Yesterday, I ate a clock... it was very time-consuming.
Especially when I went back for seconds.
Georgie got round to making Miss H's moussaka:
It looks lovely!
Max completed his Marine Biology course and got a certificate:
Congratulations Max!
Don't forget the usual reading and exercise - I don't know about you, but I've already begun planning my summer reading. I've got four books sat waiting. Mr Kershaw told me on Friday that he plans to read 10 books this summer, so obviously I'm going to have to try to top that.

Buenos días año 6, señorita H aquí!
You should be able to guess where are we travelling today, to sunny Spain! Personally, I really enjoy both making and eating Spanish food as it is packed full of flavour. Whether you're on a city break in Barcelona or Madrid, or visiting a countryside or coastal retreat, Spanish food is full of flavour and character.
I am going to give you a couple of different Spanish dishes to try to make but I have found it so hard to choose just a few! Here is a recipe for a paella. Traditionally, a paella is made with seafood like this recipe but you can add meat or make it vegan or vegetarian friendly as well!
Ingredients
1 tbsp olive oil
1 onion, chopped
1 tsp each hot smoked paprika and dried thyme
300g paella or risotto rice
3 tbsp dry sherry or white wine (optional)
400g can chopped tomatoes with garlic
900ml chicken stock
400g bag frozen seafood mix
juice ½ lemon, other half cut into wedges
handful flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped
Method
- Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a large frying pan or wok. Add 1 chopped onion and soften for 5 mins.
- Stir in 1 tsp hot smoked paprika, 1 tsp dried thyme and 300g paella or risotto rice, stir for 1 min, then splash in 3 tbsp sherry or white wine, if using.
- Once it has evaporated, stir in a 400g can of chopped tomatoes with garlic and 900ml chicken stock.
- Season and cook, uncovered, for about 15 mins, stirring now and again until rice is almost tender and still surrounded with some liquid.
- Stir 400g frozen seafood mix into the pan and cover with a lid. Simmer for 5 mins, or until the seafood is cooked through and the rice is tender.
- Squeeze over the juice of ½ lemon, scatter with a handful of flat-leaf parsley and serve with wedges from the remaining ½ lemon.
Here is a recipe for patatas bravas, a great tapas dish:
Ingredients
For the sauce
3 tbsp olive oil
1 small onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped
227g can chopped tomatoes
1 tbsp tomato purée
2 tsp sweet paprika (pimenton)
good pinch chilli powder
pinch sugar
chopped fresh parsley, to garnish
For the potatoes
900g potatoes, cut into small cubes
2 tbsp olive oil
Method
- Heat the oil in a pan and fry the onion for about 5 mins until softened.
- Add the garlic, chopped tomatoes, tomato purée, sweet paprika, chilli powder, sugar and a pinch of salt, then bring to the boil, stirring occasionally.
- Lower to a simmer and cook for 10 mins until pulpy. Can be kept chilled for up to 24 hrs.
- Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6.
- Pat the potatoes dry with kitchen paper, then tip into a roasting tin and toss in the olive oil and some seasoning.
- Roast for 40-50 mins until crisp and golden.
- Tip the potatoes into serving dishes and spoon over the tomato sauce. Sprinkle with some fresh parsley to serve.
Enjoy your day, adiós por ahora!
