VE Day 2020
admin on: Class 4
So our day of celebrations is upon us. You have all planned so carefully, thinking about activities, food, decorations and who you might invite. Such caring and thoughtful children (and adults). I was talking to my mum and dad last night and they are going to be having a cup of tea with their neighbour (at the end of the garden and using careful social distancing). Mum is also going to ring her Auntie Sadie. Auntie Sadie was around for the celebrations of VE Day 75 years ago. Mum remembers lots of conversations with her family about the war when she was younger, as she was evacuated from Liverpool for a short while and her house (as were many others) was bombed during the Blitz in Liverpool. However she doesn't remember any conversations about the celebrations on VE day so she thought she would find out what happened on her street in Liverpool back in 1945, by asking Auntie Sadie. There were quite a number of Land Girls living close by too. When you get a minute you could find out who these girls were and what they did.
If you get an opportunity today, maybe you could find out if anyone in your family has any memories of celebrating VE day. It could be that someone remembers the 50th anniversary or earlier.
On to the party! There are so many different games and activities that have been planned by you, so enjoy every minute of it. Take lots of photos if you can or draw some pictures for us and become an artist for a while.
Listen to some music from the time. Big Band music was very popular. Glen Miller is one of the most well know Big Band Swing musicians. He played the trombone. Have a listen here. You could play some of his music during your party.
Click here for Glen Miller music
You might like to listen to some other similar music. Lots of more modern artists play Swing Time and Big Band music. It is very lively and upbeat.
You could dance the Lindy hop to it or learn a few other moves from other dances.
At 11am there will be a minutes silence if you would like to join in. We certainly will be in our house. I believe that the Queen will making a speech and that the BBC are playing the famous speech that Winston Churchill made on the day 75 years ago (BBC 2:45) "We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing."
So whatever you get up to today, enjoy yourselves and keep safe.
All of the Year 4 team want to say how proud we are of you all for carrying on and being fantastic! Enjoy your long weekend, you all deserve it.

Can I remind you to send photos of your words too.

Happy Thursday tout le monde! I hope you have been having a good week planning your VE day celebrations. We have had some wonderful poems sent through, including some videos too. Sadly at the moment we can't upload video clips, but when we are all back together, maybe it would be good to watch them together?
English - I would like you to think about your celebrations (real or pretend) for Friday. Have a think about the different activities that you will be doing. Can you write a list of the activities that you will be doing and include a description of each activity please? This could be games that you might play, food you will eat, music and dance that might happen, anything that springs to mind for a VE Day celebration.
Maths - Codes were the order of the day during the war, Bletchley Park being the epicentre of top-secret code-breaking during the World War Two. I wondered if you could create a secret code using your maths knowledge to send a message to us or a friend. You could go basic or more complex, using times tables or just a number to represent a letter eg a-1, b-2 and so on. Write them down and see who can crack the code and reveal the message (be kind in your messaging!). You might want to explain your code to help the person work out the message. Happy coding!
Art - I am sure that you all saw our lovely photo-montage of the fabulous Netherthong staff.
We thought that it would be great to create our own Year 4 montage. I would like you to think about a word that describes your feelings during these times. Try to keep your words positive, happy and upbeat - just like you all are. Write, draw, decorate your word on a piece of paper and colour it in so that it will stand out. Then, it would be lovely to have a photo of you holding it, but if you are a little camera shy, just a photo of the word would be good.
You are all superstars. Take care and keep safe

Hi everyone, I hope you are enjoying all the VE day work so far this week! Our celebrations might be different to the planned ones, but they will still celebrate this 75 anniversary. We had a sponsored walk planned and there was going to be a party on our village green. We are still going to go on our walk, but just as a family and 2 dogs.
English - I have set a 2Do on Purple Mash for you to have a go at.
You have been busy writing invitations and menus. Can you hear my tummy rumble? Today I thought we would think a little bit about poetry. I have attached two poems written by the same lady, but 60 years apart.
They are all about the VE day celebrations back in 1945 and 60 years later. Have a read of them both. I wondered if you could have a go at writing a poem about VE day this year? It could be in a similar style or you could have a go at thinking of another style of poetry - acrostics or shape poetry. It doesn't need to rhyme either, but it can if you wish. Sometimes rhymes can make it harder to write. You could have a go a learning one of the poems or record yourself reading it out loud. It would be lovely to hear your voices.
Maths - TTRockstars - The tournament is still going. The girls are storming ahead at the moment. When I last looked Daisy had the same score on her own as the boys had altogether. Come on lads keep going!
Today I thought that you could have a go at battleships to help with your coordinates. Here are the instructions for you. You could play someone in your house or possibly Zoom someone to play against!
PE - I hope that you are all keeping up with your PE or some sort of physical activity We are trying our best here. During the war dance was an important part of socialising and lots of people (Male and female) did dance. I remembered seeing this style of dance a number of years ago and thought that you could have a look at some of it. I might even have shown you at school. The style of dance is the Lindy hop. With a little help maybe you could find a clip of it to watch. You could try to learn a few of the basic steps and kicks - maybe not the jumps and tricks!
Geography - As it was Victory in Europe Day, I thought that you could do a little reminder of the countries of Europe. Can you find out which countries they are, find them on a map and then you could find the name of the capital cities.
Well done you amazing lot! Keep smiling and carry on!
Miss you all lots

Good morning!
Well the party planning is well under way in our house for Friday's stay at home VE day celebration! Sophie and Will have decided that we are having a picnic party (outside if we are lucky with the weather and inside if not). We have made some lovely poppies to decorate our garden and I received my beautiful invitation today.
Here are Charlie and Orla's invitations:
English:
Today you could start thinking about the menu for your party. Think of the type of food that you would like to serve (you must discuss this with an adult at home). Can you create an official menu and create some interesting titles for your food? You could also have a look for some WWII recipes, perhaps you could recreate some this week.
History:
Back in 1945 on VE day, rationing was still in place so everyone had to bring a little bit of something to the street parties. Can you find out a little bit more about rationing?
- What was rationing?
- Why was food rationed?
- What did a rationing book look like?
- What would have happened if food wasn't rationed?
Maths:
Below is a list of food with the amount that each adult was allowed per week during WWII:
A child's ration was exactly half of an adults. Can you use the conversion chart to work out how many grams and millilitres of food and drink a child would have been allowed (per week) during WWII?
Bits and Bobs!
Well done for those who spotted there was an error on the Daily 8 and Litz Blitz yesterday - I clearly need to work harder on my Purple Mash skills! You have some more in your 2do list, hopefully it will work a bit better today!
Keep reading at home too! Try and read everyday and if you find a good book, please let me know as Sophie is going through them very quickly and I'm looking for recommendations!
Don't forget about TT Rockstars, we love to see how well you are all doing on there.
One last thing - you are all doing an amazing job! We really miss your smiley faces and can't wait for us all to be back together again.
Stay safe.
Love from Mrs Kendal and the year 4 team xx
Woof to you all!

I hope you are all ok and staying safe. I'm still staying at home. We are having fun and having extra cuddles here.
I had a really special weekend because it was my 10th birthday! Wow, I ate so many sausages! I had loads of balloons, a sausage cake and a dinosaur party with games! We even had dog music, my favourite. Lucky for me the weather was lovely and we got to have a picnic in our garden. I wore a party hat but only for a few minutes because it made my ears tickle. My family asked me to wait to open my presents until the morning and it was hard because I could sniff the tasty treats inside! Afterwards, I had a lovely long sleep and dreamt about running and barking to the hokey cokey. I enjoy that dance and know all of the moves.
I can't wait until I see you again at school and we can chat about our time staying at home and all the things we've done with our families. I hope you and your families are ok and hope to see you woofy soon.
Love and paws,
Mr Curly Wurly xxx
