Good morning!
I just want to start by saying a huge well done to Mrs Barker for completing the Netherthong Race for Life challenge yesterday and a big thank you to everyone who has donated money towards such a fantastic cause.
Today's suggested activities are as follows:
English:
After completing your plan and draft version, you are now ready to create your final story book. You can choose whether your book is hand-written or created using a computer programme (Powerpoint, Publisher or Word). Think carefully about the layout of your book. You can write in different styles, making some of the words bigger or colourful (think Tom Gates). Each page should also be illustrated (Will loves looking at the pictures in books).
When your story is complete, add a front cover and a blurb.
I am looking forward to receiving your finished stories.
Maths:
Can you conduct your own mathematical investigation?
Test a partner's reaction time by recording how fast they can grasp a ruler (or similar object) when you drop it between their fingers (if you use a timer on a smartphone, you can record the milliseconds).Repeat 5 times and record the results. Think about what method would be best for recording your data.
Choose one of these theories:
- The older you are the slower your reactions.
- Your reactions will get better over time.
- Girls will be quicker than boys.
- Boys will be quicker than girls.
- If you are left handed your reaction speed will be quicker with your left hand.
- If you are right handed your reaction speed will be quicker with your right hand.
Design an investigation to test your theory.
When you have recorded your results display your findings in a graph (think carefully about the type of graph you choose). Make sure you label your axes and give your graph a title.
Art:
Can you create a piece of artwork using everyday objects?
Here are some examples:
I'm going to have a go at this today - maybe I'll share my work with you (if you promise not to laugh!).
Purple Mash:
Have a look at your 2do list. It's great to see so many of you completing the tasks on there.
Have a lovely day.
Love from Mrs Kendal and the year 4 team xx

Good morning!
Today is the day that Mrs Barker takes part in her Race for Life challenge. At 1pm, she will be running around the playground come rain or shine, hopefully raising lots of money for such a wonderful cause.
Today's PE activity is all about supporting Mrs Barker. Join in with your very own Race for Life challenge and please send your photos to class2@netherthongprimary.co.uk
English:
Will is getting very excited about having lots of new bedtime stories to read! We have already had a sneak preview from a few of you and they are sounding great.
Hopefully you will have now planned your story so today you can start writing out your draft version. You can either write out your whole story and then decide which bits are going on which page or you can start writing your story onto different sheets so you will know what your finished book will look like. Create your draft version in whatever style you choose.
If you have planned your entire story and are ready to make the final version, then decide whether you are going to hand-write or use a computer programme such as Publisher or Powerpoint to make your book.
Your finished book will need a front cover and a blurb - you can start thinking about these if you have time.
Maths:
As we were busy bug hunting yesterday, I thought we would stick with the same theme!
Here is a mathematical caterpillar...
Have a go at making your own. The rules are as follows:
- Pick a number to go in the caterpillar's head. The number must be less than 100.
- If the number you choose is even then you must halve it to get the next number.
- If the number you choose is odd then you must add one to get the next number.
- Follow the same rules each time to make the next number.
- Stop when you reach the number 1.
Can you create a caterpillar that is longer than the one shown?
Can you create a caterpillar that is shorter than the one shown?
How long is the longest possible caterpillar?
What do you notice?
Computing:
Animation - pictures or objects appear to move.
Speak to an adult at home - did they have any favourite animated programmes when they were younger? My favourite was called Bagpuss. If you have permission from an adult to watch YouTube, try and find some of your parents' favourites.
How do the characters in the programmes appear to be moving? How has the programme been made?
When the first animations were made they were all hand drawn. Have a go at making a simple animation by drawing an object multiple times (each on a different piece of paper) but each time move the position of the object. When you flick through the pages it will look like your object is moving.
The more simple your drawing, the better!
Purple Mash:
I have added a Litz Blitz and maths activity into your 2do list.
Have a wonderful day.

Race for Life
admin on: Class 4
So the Netherthong Race for Life is tomorrow at 1pm! I know so many of you have organised your own event in your gardens and surrounding areas. We have had so much support through the fundraising link, we are now at around 75% of our £1000 target. Please keep sharing this link so that we can reach our goal.
If you take any photos or videos of your event, please email them to class2@netherthongprimary.co.uk If you send in your pictures, we will automatically presume you give us permission to use on the website and other sites associated with Cancer Research. I hope to put some kind of montage together when I recover from running around the playground! This will be a wonderful whole school collaboration at a time when we can’t be together. Good luck – knowing that you are all there will spur me on, I’m sure!
Happy running!

Good morning Class 4!
I hope you have all had a wonderful, long weekend enjoying the sunshine and celebrating VE day.
Jake and Orla looked as though they celebrated in style - here they are:
We had our own little garden party which involved a picnic, water slide and pool. Great fun was had by all!
Now for today's suggested activities:
English:
Help needed! Last night, I tried to find a book on William's bookshelf that we have not yet read - I couldn't! This gave me a little idea...
It would be lovely if this week, my wonderfully-creative class could create some new stories that I could read to Will at bedtime.
Today I would like you to plan out a story (a storyboard or mind-map will help with this). Decide on the rough outline of your story:
- What will your story be about?
- Who/what will the characters be?
- How will your story start?
- How will your story end?
You will also need to remember that Will is only 5, so the language doesn't need to be too complicated. Think back to some of your favourite, picture-book stories when you were younger, maybe you could use those as inspiration. If you're struggling for ideas think of a book that you have read and write the sequel.
Maths:
Symmetry - Something is symmetrical when it is the same on both sides. A shape has symmetry if a central dividing line (a mirror line) can be drawn on it, to show that both sides are exactly the same.
Have some fun with symmetry today!
Using Lego, lollipop sticks, pasta, buttons or anything else that has the same size/shape pieces, can you make different shapes each with a different amount of lines of symmetry?
How many of the following shapes can you make?
- A shape with no lines of symmetry.
- A shape with only 1 line of symmetry.
- A 4 sided polygon with 4 lines of symmetry.
- A hexagon with only 1 line of symmetry.
- A shape with 6 lines of symmetry.
Science:
I have received some great classification keys over the last couple of weeks from some of you, now see if you can use mine!
I hope you are not feeling squeamish today as I would like you to find a safe space to go bug hunting.
Look carefully under stones and plant pots to see if you can spot some mini-beasts. When you find one, look closely and answer the questions on the key below:
Then have a think about the habitat that you found each creature in and record your findings in a table like the one below:
Remember, keep your hands away from your mouth and wash them thoroughly as soon as you have finished. Please put any creatures you find back in the same place carefully.
Happy bug hunting!
Purple Mash:
I have experimented with a different format for today's Litz Blitz, have a go and see if it works a little better. Instead of a Maths daily 8, I have set a symmetry activity as a 2do.
Have a super day.
