Good morning, Class 5. Welcome to your last half term as Class 5! I hope you had a good half term. I've been lucky enough to see Owen, Alex, Libby F and Eavan who all said hello from a distance whilst walking past school last week. It was great to see some of you, I miss you all very much!

Here is the work for today.

Reading comprehension

I have set a 2Do on PurpleMash. There will be two tasks. The first is to read chapter 1 of A Bridge on Fire. Then, there is a multiple choice quiz to complete. If you check your 2Do list, you will see the two tasks on there. I will be setting most of your reading tasks on PurpleMash over the next few weeks. Your logins are in your home school books, but if you are having trouble logging in, please let me know by emailing me and I will help you out.

English

For English this week, I thought we could look back on our school year and write a 'Guide to Surviving Year 5'. Today, you will just be answering questions in note form to help you start thinking about what to include in the guide. I have split the questions into categories.

Topics and work

What topics have we learnt about this year? If you're struggling to remember, please email me and I will help jog your memory!

Which was your favourite one? Why?

What tips do you have for dealing with work in Year 5?

Which subjects did you find quite difficult? How did you overcome this?

Mr. Kershaw

What is Mr. Kershaw like as a teacher? (This could backfire on me!!).

What rules does Mr. K have?

Classroom routines

What does a typical day look like in Year 5? What do we do in the morning? What about the afternoon?

If you follow the rules, what rewards do you get?

If you don't follow the rules, what are the sanctions?

Classroom

What is in the classroom? How are the tables set up?

Which toilets do you use?

Which door do you use at break? What about at lunch?

Keep these notes safe, we will be using them later in the week.

Here are your 8 grammar questions:

1.) Where is the article? An article is a type of determiner remember.             I tried to grab the tennis ball, but I slipped.

2.) Where is the adverb?   We need to move cautiously if we are to succeed.

3.) Where is the modal verb?   I should tidy up before I go home.

4.) Where is the adverb that shows possibility?       You have definitely impressed me!

5.) Add the comma.        The car was blue but it looked green in the moonlight.

6.) Where would you have to include brackets to show parenthesis?     Space X owned by Elon Musk launched two astronauts into orbit on Saturday.

7.) Where is the main clause?   Despite being off school for ten weeks, she has still managed to remember all her times tables.

8.) Fill in the missing word.    A determiner introduces a noun or a ............. phrase.

Maths

Before half term, we added fractions with different denominators. Today, we will  be adding fractions that are greater than 1. So there may be some mixed numbers to add. The first video has a really good explanation of how to do this. Remember, you will need to make sure you change the fractions to have the same denominator. Careful! If your fraction parts result in an improper fraction, you will need to change them into a mixed number.

There are two worksheets for you to do after watching the two videos.

Science

We have pretty much covered most of the science in Year 5 already. There was one small section of how humans grow that we haven't been able to cover, but apart from that we have finished! This half term we are going to recap many areas of science that you have learnt over the last 3 years. First up is magnets. Watch the video in the link below, then complete the quiz and the task. If you do not have a magnet in your house, please email me and I can arrange to lend you a magnet from school.

PE

This half term, I would like to see us exploring new ways to stay active. It would be great if we could do things we haven't done in the last 10 weeks. Of course, you may continue doing Joe Wicks or any other activities you have been doing, but if you do start a new activity, let me know what it is.

Some suggestions:

  • There are loads of good YouTube videos on yoga for kids. Have a look what's out there and try it out.
  • Also, some of the Strictly Come Dancing professionals have been doing videos for kids where they teach them a new dance routine. Maybe try this out?
  • There are many famous sports stars who are providing activities to do at home as well. Have a look to see if your favourite sports star is doing something.

Have a great day, and remember you can email me at any time with your work, your questions or just to say hello!
