Happy Wesak!

admin on: Reception

14th May 2021

Happy Wesak! In preparation for the Buddhist festival on May 26th, we have been looking at how people who follow this religion celebrate. As Buddhists believe in kindness, we have been practising being extra kind to everyone, both at home and in school.

We designed lotus flowers and leaves from the Bodhi tree to decorate our climbing frame. We then had a picnic underneath, like a marquee, as Buddhists decorate their own marquees and have a feast in them with family and friends.

Buddhists believe in meditation which helps to relax and soothe the soul. We listened to mindful music while we did some meditation of our own.

In maths, we have been looking at different shapes. We discovered how squares, put together, can make bigger squares or rectangles. We also looked at the book Grandpa's Quilt by Betsy Franco and then using 2D shapes, designed our own quilt for Grandpa which would cover his feet! Towards the end of the week, we looked at tangrams and made our own patterns with them.

Why not try meditating at home this weekend!

Have a relaxing weekend and hope the weather stays dry!

We are all about healthy habits

admin on: Reception

7th May 2021

What a positive week we have had here in Reception! We have been looking at how we can keep ourselves healthy and safe. This includes our bodies, minds, hygiene and keeping safe on roads. We also had a discussion as to what makes a balanced diet.

We have looked at healthy and unhealthy food groups. We had to sort through various different foods and make a decision as to whether the food needed to go in the healthy circle or the unhealthy circle.

We used various different equipment to find different ways we could exercise our bodies and make our heart rate increase, building the muscles inside the heart and around the rest of our bodies.

We used meditation and yoga to calm ourselves down and give our bodies and minds time to relax and be in the moment, thinking about keeping positive thoughts flowing.

We learnt two songs to help us wash our hands and brush our teeth for the correct amount of time. Here are the links to the songs:

Brush Your Teeth - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCio_xVlgQ0

What a busy week we have had, even though it has been a short one!

have a lovely weekend and hope the sun continues to shine!

Vegetables everywhere!

admin on: Reception

30th April 2021

This week we have been looking at the book, Oliver's Vegetables by Vivian French. We looked at which vegetables grow above and below the ground. We then looked at which part of the plant we eat, the roots, stem, leaves or flower.

On Wednesday, we looked at the artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo, who painted pictures of different fruits, vegetables, meat and fish together to make portraits of people. We had a go at this ourselves, using paint, pastels and cut out fruit.

In science, we predicted which vegetables would sink or float in water. We recorded our predictions then tested them and were surprised with the results!

Oliver brought some exciting items into class this week! At his Grandad's farm, they had de-horned a cow and bull, so after they have been disinfected, he brought them in to show everyone! We even got to see videos and pictures of the process the vet used. Thank you Oliver and family!

Why not try some different vegetables at home!

Have a lovely long bank holiday weekend and we hope the weather stays sunny!

Bog Baby bananza!

admin on: Reception

23rd April 2021

We have spent the week looking at the book Bog Baby by Jeanne Willis. We went into the wood on a Bog Baby hunt to see if we could find one in our own woodland. We looked under logs, piles of leaves, bluebell thickets, inside the crowns of ferns and in the long meadow grass.

We also made our own Bog Baby using blue playdough and created the features using natural and man-made materials.

Using white oil pastels, we created a Bog Baby scene then we used a blue paint wash to reveal the beautiful designs.

We carried on developing our weaving skills by sewing Bog Baby, using wool, needles and paper. We then decorated them.

The children did an experiment on Wednesday, where they coloured in some water lilies, folded the petals into the centre, placed it on top of some water in a tray then something magical happened...

The petals opened up gradually to reveal the flower they had beautifully decorated!

Maybe you could go on your own Bog Baby hunt this weekend in the lovely weather!

Have a wonderful weekend and happy hunting!

Knights and Castles galore!

admin on: Reception

16th April 2021

We have had an exciting week exploring the theme of castles and knights. We have looked at all of the sections of a castle, who worked in the castle and where they were built.

We have been very busy with our craft activities! We have designed our own coats of arms, woven our own patterns in shields and used newspaper to design our own castles. We have loved letting our creativity flow!

We even built our own castles using big, foam bricks outside!

In phonics, we have looked at been using adjectives to describe knights and kings.

This week, we have also started our tennis lessons with Thongsbridge Tennis Club! The weather was glorious as we begun to develop the basic skills needed. Our tennis lessons will be every Monday until the end of Reception!

Have a lovely weekend and hope the weather continues to stay nice and sunny!
