Monday 8th June

Posted: Jun 8, 2020 by: Liam Kershaw (LKershaw) on: Class 5

Morning Class 5! What a weekend I've had! The power went off on Saturday afternoon, and didn't come back on until late that night. Then the Internet went down as well! Then... I'm sure I heard a mouse in the attic... again! Let's hope for a nicer weekend this week!

Reading

I have set a reading comprehension on PurpleMash in your 2Dos. There is a multiple choice quiz as well.

English

I realised that we have been doing a lot of non-fiction writing, so I thought we could experiment with some different ways of writing fiction this week.

First of all, I want you to look carefully at this picture.

I want you to write a short story (no more than 3 paragraphs) about this picture. This is to help you work on your creativity. Can you make a story up from just a picture?

Think about these questions to help your story:

How was it built?

Who lives there?

Who is the figure walking towards the house? Are they good? Evil?

This story is just a way for you to practise writing a short story. Please don't worry about it, it is meant to be a fun little exercise. Remember to keep your writing well-presented and check the grammar, punctuation and spelling though. I would love to hear what you think the story is behind this picture.

Grammar questions:

1.) What type of sentence is this?    Cut the onion in half.

2.) Where is the conjunction?   Although the onion was cut in half, it was still too big.

3.) Add a comma:   Frances you need to tie your shoe laces.

4.) Add an apostrophe to make the girls plural.         The girls party was ruined.

5.) What tense is this sentence written in?    He will arrive in twenty minutes.

6.) Select the correct word.    I have ate/eaten/eated/eating all my lunch.

7.) Where is the article?   His car was parked next to the blue van.

8.) Where is the pronoun? Andy accidentally gave himself a paper cut.

Maths

In maths, we are going to continue to look at multiplying fractions. Today we are looking at multiplying a mixed number by an integer (whole number).

The video shows you two methods. My method that I have taught you is the first method. However, you may prefer to do it the second way. Have a look at the video and see what you think.

There are two activities for you to do. Both have some opportunities for you to test the method you want to use, as well as some problem-solving questions too. If you want to do any practice of just the method first, here are some questions for you to do that.

2 and 2/3 X 5

4 and 1/7 X 8

6 and 2/5 X 4

Here are your 10 questions for today:

1.) 793 X 39

2.) 1/4 + 3/8 + 1/16

3.) Change to a mixed number:   7/3

4.) 50% of 40

5.) 8/16 as a fraction in its lowest form.

6.) 0.654 X 3 (do it as a column method, and just be careful with your decimal point. Put it in the answer first).

7.) 3000 X 200

8.) 6.743 + 0.222

9.) 5 squared times 2 squared.

10.) 1 - 3/100             (Change the 1 into a fraction).

Science

As I mentioned last week, we have nearly covered all of the Year 5 science already this year. There is a part about human life cycles that we didn't get to do as it was scheduled for the last two weeks before Easter, when we went into lockdown. It was about how a human body changes as it grows from a baby to old age. This link doesn't go into any great detail at all, but it helps to revise the life cycles of other animals, plus gives you some key words to do with the life cycle of a human.

I need to stress to parents that it does NOT go into any great detail about human development. However, this would've been taught more extensively in school if lockdown had not occurred, so you may want to discuss with your child in more detail.

There are a few quizzes for you to do and a sheet on the life cycle of an amphibian (even though it says mammal on the instructions!). See how much you can remember from your science on the life cycle of an amphibian. Anna - you should find this easy as you have your pet tadpoles!

PE

Keep up with the daily activities. I'm considering taking up yoga. Anybody have a recommended person to learn yoga on YouTube?
