Friday 5th June

Posted: Jun 4, 2020 by: Liam Kershaw (LKershaw) on: Class 5

Morning! Did you know it has been 11 weeks today since you were all last in? I really can't believe how long it has been! I am missing you all so much, and I know a lot of you are missing school as well. Some of you have been asking me about when we will all be back in school, and the honest answer is I really don't know. As soon as I know more, I will let you know! In the meantime, thank you for continuing to stay in touch and sending me in work.

Please drop me an email today if I haven't heard from you this week. The emails don't have to include work if you don't want to, just a quick message to tell me how you are.

Here are the answers to yesterday's daily questions:

1.) Where is the determiner?    Jeff's car is next to that van.

2.) Where is the pronoun?  Josh grabbed his umbrella as he did not like rain!

3.) Where is the modal verb? We must be careful!

4.) Where is the adverb of possibility?     We could possibly go to the park later.

5.) Add the comma:    Once you have finished your work, you can go out to play.

6.) Add ONE dash to indicate the parenthesis.      This is not acceptable don't you agree?

7.) Where is the main clause?  Tina, who lives next door to Tim, is a very kind person.

8.) Fill in the missing word.   An adjective describes a noun.

1.) 555 X 53   29,415

2.) 345 metres in kilometres.   0.345km

3.) Add the Roman Numerals.   XL + L =   40 + 50 = 90

4.) 4 and 2/3 X 3    14

5.) 3/4 + 5/8 + 1/16 =    Change them all to sixteenths.        12/16 + 10/16 + 1/16 = 23/16 or 1 and 7/16

6.) 7/10 as a percentage    70%

7.) 4.005 + 1.32   5.325

8.) Which digit is in the THOUSANDTHS column?    9731.026

9.) 7 squared take away 3 cubed.    7 squared is 49      2 cubed is 27                     49 - 27 = 22

10.) What is the next number in the sequence?    6.003, 6.002, 6.001, ?    6 or 6.000

Grammar

Before half term, we looked at how to link different paragraphs using adverbials. Today, we are going to look at linking ideas within the same paragraph. Remember, a paragraph should have a clear focus. That is why sometimes you use subheadings for paragraphs in non-fiction writing. But even without subheadings, each paragraph should focus on one thing.

You should introduce your focus of a paragraph in the first sentence. Then, we need to link ideas in a paragraph in a logical order. We can use adverbials to link sentences. We can use things like:

  • For example...
  • However...
  • Therefore...

These are often at the start of sentences, but they can also go in the middle of sentences. In this sentence I am writing right now, for example, you can see that I have put the adverbial in the middle.

Maths

Its speed tables day! You've had a week off, so might be a bit rusty. However, I would love to know your times, so please email me them in ready for our shout outs this afternoon.

Here are the speed tables sheets if you need them.

Here is the mental maths for this week. I will post the answers this afternoon.

French

We haven't done any French since we've been at home, so today I thought we would do some like we used to on some Fridays in school.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zmt74xs

The first video will help you learn the name of school subjects in French. Make sure you practise saying these words out loud.

The second video is about hobbies in French. Again, see if you can pick up any of the words.

Then click the link for the first activity. It has a lot of different words for hobbies in French. Go through them, then click the links on the side to learn more and test yourself. See how you do!

The second activity asks you to draw a map of your school and label the room names in French. There is a word bank with French words, and I have translated them for you below.

If you would rather translate them yourselves with a French dictionary or an online translator tool, then don't look below!

La salle de classe = classroom - You could label each classroom this, with the number after it. So our classroom would be 'La salle de class 5'

La cour de recreation = playground

La bibliotheque = library

La salle de musique = music room (we don't have one of these)

Le terrain de jou = This also means playground

La grande salle = The hall (it actually means 'the big room').

La salle d'informatique = The computer room - you could label the corridor outside Year 4 this as that is where we keep the laptops.

Le bureau du directeur or le bureau de la directrice = Both mean head teacher's office, but as we have a female head teacher, you would use the second one.

La cantine = The food hall (where you eat your lunch. You could label the hall this if you want).

Le bureau = The office

Le couloir = the hallway or corridor.

La salle des professeurs = The staff room.

PE

Keep active as always! Joe Wicks does Fancy Dress Friday, which is always entertaining. His panda suit last week had me worried. He looked very warm!
