Thursday 14th May

Posted: May 13, 2020 by: Liam Kershaw (LKershaw) on: Class 5

Good Morning!

Uniform Day Friday 15th May

First of all, you may have seen 'Uniform Day' mentioned on the newsletter yesterday. Normally, when we're in school, we have a non-uniform day every now and again. Well, as we aren't in school and therefore aren't wearing our uniforms anymore, we thought that tomorrow Friday 15th May, we would have a day where all the children can wear their uniform if they want. We are encouraging you all to put on your school uniform tomorrow, and complete your home school work in your uniform. We are hoping this will be a way to bring us all together! I will be wearing my shirt and tie, and I will post a picture tomorrow to prove it! If you want to send a picture tomorrow of you in uniform, I will post it on the blog. Let's see how many of us can send in pictures of us in uniform, and see if we can beat the other classes! A big thank you to Libby F, who came up with the idea for uniform day!

Here are the answers to yesterday's daily questions:

1.) Add two apostrophes to this sentence: We couldn't go to Harold's party.

2.) How many pronouns? They could not see them in the crowd.   2

Reading

Spend 30 minutes reading today. Thanks to Evie for sending in some examples on Tuesday of the books she is reading. Thanks to Libby F for doing the same on Wednesday. I would love to see more examples from everyone else!

English

Next week, we will be writing our biography about a great woman from history. So far, you have researched a little bit about each of the women from the list I gave you on Monday, and then you have researched one of these women in more detail. Yesterday, you organised your notes into subheadings.

Today, you will be looking at your notes and thinking about what information is missing. Is there anything else you want to know about the person you have researched? Usually, when you research something, you don't have exact questions in mind. You find a webpage with information on it, and copy down the bits you like. But, sometimes it is good to have a specific focus to your research. So, you need to look at your notes today, and think about what you don't know about the woman you are writing about.

You may look at your notes and realise you have no information about their family. Or you might want to know more about their childhood. Think of specific questions that you could type into the search bar.

For example:

  • What university did they go to? (They might not have gone to university, so be careful!).
  • Did they have any children?
  • Did they become famous in their lifetime or after they died?
  • Can you find any quotes from this person about their life or success? You can use quotes in a biography, I will show you how and where next week.
  • Any other information about them that you would like to find out?

Write the extra facts in your home school book; remember to group them under the same categories that you came up with yesterday.

Here are the 8 grammar questions:

1.) Add an apostrophe:    Its too cold today.

2.) How many pronouns? He said it was his, but I know it is mine.

3.) Where is the subordinating conjunction?   If I try my best, I will be proud of myself.

4.) Where is the collective noun?  The school of fish were visible from the shore.

5.) Add a comma.   You are okay aren't you?

6.) Where is the possessive pronoun? That is definitely not yours.

7.) Where is the modal verb?  You will go to the shop tomorrow morning.

8.) What type of word have I underlined?  I saw a cat on that wall.

Maths

Today, you are going to continue looking at volume by counting the blocks of 3D shapes made up of smaller cubes. This is a Mathletics task. You need to count how many blocks you can see, but also be aware that there may be more behind them. You can use multiplication to help you. I have put up a picture to help you.

Here are your 10 questions for today:

1.) 931 X 45

2.) 80.02 X 1000

3.) 80.02 divided by 1000

4.) 1/4 + 3/16 + 3/8

5.) 60% as a fraction in its lowest form.

6.) What is 25% of 4?

7.) 5.078 + 1/10

8.) -9 + 10

9.) What is 4 squared add 2 cubed?

10.) 9654 - 794

Topic

We have been looking at renewable energy in topic this week. Today, I would like you to have a go at creating a model wind turbine. I have provided you with 3 different examples of how to make a model turbine, with different materials that you might find in your home. I have given you 3 different choices, so you can pick the one that best suits you and the materials you have in your house.

Because this may take a while to prepare, I don't expect you all to complete it today if you don't want to. You might want to read/watch each of the examples today, and decide which one you want to do. Then, you might need to spend this afternoon gathering the things you need. This may take a little while! So you may want to continue it tomorrow or over the weekend. You probably will need help from an adult or older sibling with this task. I would love to see what you come up with!

This one does require lots of different types of material, so make sure you've checked that you have these before starting!

how_to_make_a_wind_turbine_instructions.pdf

This one is by far the simplest in terms of materials you need. You just need some card, scissors and glue. Make sure you read the whole document before trying it. The word 'nacelle' is explained further down the document.

Model Wind Turbine Activity Sheet.pdf

This one is a web link with a video from the US department for energy. If you learn better from watching, then this one might be the one for you! This one also doesn't require too many materials.

PE

James has been cycling this week, as you may have seen on the updates post yesterday. What else are people doing to keep fit?
