Wednesday's work

Posted: Mar 24, 2020 by: Liam Kershaw (LKershaw) on: Class 5

Morning! Thank you again for all your comments and emails. It has been really encouraging to see.

The answers to yesterday's grammar and maths first:

1.) Where are the two verbs?   Terry grabbed the phone and used it to ring Jerry.

Sorry! There are actually 3 verbs in this sentence, so any two are correct!

2.) Punctuate this sentence: Arnold (aged 9) was the first child to win the race.

Or, instead of brackets you can have commas or dashes.

3.) Where is the modal verb?  I am excited because I might be getting a dog.

4.) Where is the possessive pronoun?  Are you sure that is ours

5.) Add a comma: I like cake, but I am never allowed to eat it.

6.) What is wrong with this sentence?  At the end of the lane a car parked up and waited.

There should be a comma after lane, because it is a fronted adverbial.

7.) How many determiners are there?  The car was blue and it had a large roof rack.

Two determiners.

8.) Why is a comma used?  The baby was loud, cute and smiley.

It is used to separate adjectives in a list.

Maths:

1.) 3 and 3/7 X 7   24

2.) 1/2 as a percentage.  50%

3.) What is the difference between 1 and 2/3 and 1/3    4/3 or 1 and 1/3

4.) Which is the largest?   9/50    0.453     49%

5.) -19 + 27    8

6.) What is the perimeter of a regular hexagon with 5cm sides?    30cm

7.) What is the area of a rectangle which has a length of 10 and a width of 5.46?    54.6

8.) 943 X 64    60,352

9.) What are the prime factors of 50?  (Hint: Think 'cherry tree' method).      5, 5, 2

10.) Name a multiple of 12 which is also a multiple of 5.       60 is the main one. You can have 120 too. Obviously, there are infinite ones, but I imagine you chose one of these!

9:00-10:00: English

Over the next few days, we are going to write a 'tips for avoiding boredom' piece of writing. This piece of writing is going to include lots of fun and helpful tips for avoiding boredom whilst at home. Obviously, you will all do many different things to keep busy, so your work for today is to create a spider diagram of everything you have done over the last few days to stop boredom setting in. I would like us to create these tips, so that we can share them and hopefully we can have 31 different people's advice on how to avoid boredom.

Once you have created a spider diagram of activities that you have already done (or maybe some you haven't done yet, but are planning on it), I would like you to start thinking of examples of these sentences that you could include in your eventual tips piece of writing.

Write an example of:

  • A rhetorical question
  • A 'some;other' exciting sentence. (Example: Some people have a book to pass the time; others try to break their keep me up record).
  • 20 different adjectives you might use to describe the activities you are doing. Obviously, these need to be FANTASTIC adjectives that are REALLY positive.

This piece of writing is an information text which is designed to lift people's spirits and share some great ideas. I would like to eventually share them on the blog! Remember, you are NOT writing it today, you are just coming up with a list of things to do, and completing the 3 bullet point tasks.

The Daily 8 today:

1.) Where is the conjunction?   Terry grabbed the phone and used it to ring Jerry.

2.) Punctuate this sentence: because i had to do my homework i missed my favourite show

3.) Where is the adverb of possibility?  Perhaps we will play in the garden today.

4.) Where is the possessive pronoun?  We took theirs by mistake.

5.) Add a comma: Grace you are very late.

6.) What is wrong with this sentence?  Hello shouted Andy.

7.) How many determiners are there?  That car belongs to us, but this car is Andy's.

8.) Where is the subordinate clause? Despite being 10, they were too short to go on the ride.

10:00-10:30 Reading

30 minutes of reading or talking to someone about your book. You can even use this half an hour to email/comment on the blog about the book you are reading. I will also tell you about the books I am reading if you message!

11:00-12:00 Maths

To consolidate what you have learnt about nets, there is a Mathletics task for you to do on it. I would encourage you take your time with this, and even make the nets you are given.

Also, I have set a revision task on time and 24 hour clocks, ready for our work on time that is coming up soon.

The 10 questions today are:

1.) 10 and 1/12 X 4

2.) 3/4 as a percentage.

4.) Which is the largest?   74%  3/4   0.3

8.) 674 X 34

9.) What are the prime factors of 48?  (Hint: Think 'cherry tree' method).

10.) Which of these numbers are composite (the opposite of prime)?

      5          6           12          7            11             54

13:00-14:00

PE - Same as yesterday. Either Joe Wicks (we did it today, it was so tiring!) or an activity from our list.

14:00-15:00 ICT

On Purplemash, I have set you a 2do task. Your login for Purplemash is in your yellow book, in case you can't remember it. It is a quiz making app. I would like you to create a quiz about everything we have learnt about Mayans so far.

Remember, we have learnt about:

  • Where they lived.
  • What time period they lived in.
  • Their architecture
  • Their food
  • Their gods

If you need to do some additional research on them to help you, you may. Please don't cover areas of Mayan culture that we haven't learnt yet, as we have some more to do next week.

I will be having a go at the completed quizzes.

Have a fantastic day.

Mr. K
