The Big Build Week

Posted: Mar 25, 2022 by: Liz McLoughlin (LMcLoughlin) on: Class 1

Friday 25th March

The long-awaited start date for our Motte & Bailey castle builds finally arrived this week - thank you so much for all your supplies.   The children had great fun thinking about how to ensure their Mottes were 'freestanding' on their base and you may have noticed the green paint 'grass' coming home with them!  We had to think about our sizing, our join work and certainly used our fine motor cutting skills.  More build work next week!
We enjoyed a spring walk in Science this week, noticing all the signs and new growth. The tree blossom on the field was perfectly timed and we even enjoyed the quiet buzz of a few bumble bees as we sat and 'noticed'.
In Literacy, we've been remembering the classic Little Red Riding Hood and sequencing the story, writing our own story maps and then creating instructions for the cupcakes Little Red Riding Hood takes to Granny.  You might expect some baking requests this weekend!
In Maths, we've been looking at capacity and volume and have had great fun learning practically with the water troughs.
As you know, our topic has been 'Let the battle commence' this half term and we've been acquiring knowledge about events beyond our living history that are significant nationally.  So far. it's been the battle for the Crown and the 1066 Battle of Hastings in History. This week the children studied the battle and learned about the role of the shield wall in Harold's defeat by William.  The children made a shield each; next week is the re-enactment on the hill! Watch this space!
We hope you have a super weekend in the gorgeous spring weather.
