Well, we've made it to the end of week 1 of Class 5 @ Home. A huge thank you to all your photographs and for the enthusiasm I have seen for continuing your education. I am really proud of you all, but I do miss having you all in school!
Just a further reminder that the times I have put on each subject are suggested times only. You may prefer to do it at different times, and that is absolutely fine. I have suggested times in case you prefer to stick a routine, but if you would rather do it differently, that is absolutely fine too! Also, if you feel you can't get through all the work I have set, please don't worry. I will post the maximum I would teach each day, but you and your adult can decide together how much you do. The main thing is you keep safe and keep smiling.
Fridays are a little different when we're in school, so it will be the same for home school. On Fridays, we don't have an English lesson, instead we have grammar. So keep a page spare in your home school book for our English work, which we will resume next week.
9:00-9:30 Reading
Continue reading your book. Feel free to write a book review in your home school book if you finish a novel.
9:30-10:15 Grammar
Today, we will be looking at verbs with suffixes. A suffix is a string of letters at the end of a word. In particular, we will be looking at adding a suffix which converts nouns and adjectives into verbs. The suffixes we will look at are -ify, -ise, -en and -ate.
Classify is a verb which means to put something into a class. E.g: We classify materials as solids, liquids and gases.
We add the suffix -ify to class to change it from a noun to a verb.
Harden is a verb which means to become hard. E.g: Leave the mixture in the fridge to harden.
We add the suffix -en to hard to change it from an adjective to a verb.
Other words that can change into a verb with a suffix are:
- Simple becomes simplify
- Category becomes categorise
- Equal becomes equalise
There are loads of them! First of all, I would like you to write sentences using these verbs:
- Soften
- Vandalise
- Tighten
- Investigate
You can write these sentences in your book, and they can be about whatever you like. On Fridays, we like to write silly sentences in our grammar lessons, so you may do the same today as long as they aren't unkind or rude! Peppa Pig and Shrek seem to make an appearance in a lot of your sentences, so you may want to keep up on this tradition! Feel free to comment on the blog with your sentences.
Then, when you have done this, turn to page 26 in your Schofield and Sims Grammar books which I sent home in your home schooling pack. Complete the activities by changing the words into verbs by adding a suffix.
10:15-10:30 Spelling
Next week, on Friday, your adult can test you on these spellings. So use the 15 minutes this week to practise them.
Our last lot of spellings were on the 'shus' sound that is spelt 'cious'. Today, we are looking at the same sound, but with the spelling pattern 'tious'.
Here are the words:
- Cautious
- Nutritious
- Ambitious
- Fictitious
- Superstitious
- Scrumptious
There are only 6 this week. When practising, try different ways of doing it. You could write them out backwards, or write them using a different colour for each letter. The main thing is that you learn the 'tious' spelling pattern.
11:00-12:00 Maths
Maths is also different on a Friday. We usually do a mental maths test and speed tables. The good news is you can still do both at home, you just need an adult to help you get started.
Speed tables first. I have put a few speed tables sheets in each of your packs. Please don't use them all! Just do one today. I have also uploaded a photo of the speed tables grid so you can print it off if you need to.
The numbers down the side are in this order this week: 4, 6, 2, 7, 9, 5, 11, 10, 3, 8, 12
Here are the girds if you need them (the first is a right-handed one and the second is a left-handed one).
I would love it if you could comment on the blog with the results of your speed tables. Remember, you have 5 minutes to do it. I will be doing it as well, so I will let you know my time.
Here is the sheet for mental maths. You will need your adult or a sibling to read the questions to you, if that is possible.
Adults: Here are the questions. You simply read these outloud to your child, giving them the time instructed. I will post the answers in a separate post later on today.
13:00-13:30 PSHE
Spend some time speaking to your adult about how you are feeling. What are you liking about home schooling? What do you miss about school? Is there anything else I can do to help you feel better? What has been your favourite memory of this week? Have you learnt anything new about someone in your family this week?
Please email me with any suggestions, after speaking to your adults.
13:30-14:30 PE
It's Friday! We normally do badminton on a Friday, however any physical exercise is appropriate. Enjoy yourselves, and have a well-earned rest afterwards.
Normally, at the end of a day on Friday, we have our merit assembly, where I choose two children who are awarded a merit for their work this week. Well, you ALL deserve a merit. You are fantastic, and you have adapted amazingly to this weird situation!
Thank you so much for everything you are doing at home. I miss you all, and hopefully see you soon! If you need anything, please email me at class5@netherthongprimary.co.uk
Stay safe and keep smiling!
Mr. K
