Wednesday's Work

Posted: Mar 31, 2020 by: Liam Kershaw (LKershaw) on: Class 5

Good morning!

First of all, thank you so much for continuing to further your education at home. It's nice to see you doing a combination of things I am providing for you, as well as your own ideas for learning at home. A combination of the two will help keep you busy, and keep the mind working. I know it is a strange time, but just know you are doing great and we will get through this. It would be great if you all could continue to keep in touch with me via email. I'd like to know what you're all getting up to and how you are coping at the moment. Remember, you can email me at class5@netherthongprimary.co.uk. I aim to respond to emails from 8-5 on weekdays, and will check them also on weekends.

Here are the answers to yesterday's daily questions.

English:

1.) Where is the FULL noun phrase?  Recently, my younger brother got married.

2.) Where is the main clause?  Despite it being rainy, we went for a walk.

3.) What tense is this sentence in? How do you know?  We heard the wind blowing outside.  It is in the past tense. The word 'heard' tells me this.

4.) What is wrong with this sentence?   Their are over 200 pupils at Netherthong Primary School.  It should be 'there', not 'their'.

5.) Add a comma:   I like oranges, but I don't like the smell of orange peel.

6.) Find the 3 adverbs:    We had nearly finished our jigsaw, but Fiona quietly removed the last piece and was slyly hiding it behind her back.

7.) Where is the conjunction? The race was difficult, but he completed it!

8.) How many nouns?  The trolley contained plums, apples and an orange.    4 nouns: trolley, plums, apples, orange

Maths:

1.) 7 and 1/4 X 5   36 and 1/4

2.) 1/3 + 5/6   7/6 or 1 and 1/6

3.) How many vertices, edges and faces does a triangular prism have?   Vertices: 6     Edges: 9    Faces: 5

4.) Write seventy thousand, eight hundred and one in digits.   70,801

5.) A number has 4 tens, 5 thousands, 3 hundreds and 3 ten thousands. What is the number? Think about what goes in the column I haven't mentioned.  35,340

6.) 7.899 + 4.328  12.227

7.) Round 6.89 to one decimal place.   6.9

8.) A regular octagon has 10cm sides. What is the perimeter?   80cm

9.) 3 cubed + 4 squared.      3 cubed = 27    4 squared = 16        27 + 16 = 43

10.) Name all the factors of 24    1 and 24, 2 and 12, 3 and 8, 4 and 6

Here are today's suggested activities. Remember, you can do them whenever you want, or you can stick to the timescales I highlighted last week.

English

You should've more or less completed your 'tips for beating boredom' piece of writing. I would love to see some, thank you to those that have emailed them to me. I will be creating a blog post on Wednesday afternoon with all the pieces of writing I receive. Today, I would like you to have a break from writing by decorating your information piece. You can draw pictures of the activities, take photographs and stick them on, or simply do a border. Also, make sure you actually do some of the activities you have written about!

Here are the 8 questions:

1.) Where is the FULL EXPANDED noun phrase?  In front of me was the white castle with beautiful marble pillars.

2.) Where is the subordinate clause? We are going to go for a walk if the weather stays nice.

3.) Change this sentence into past tense.   I am starting a new book, today.

4.) What is wrong with this sentence?  Weve only got 3 more questions to do.

5.) Contract these two words using an apostrophe:       We would

6.) Is the underlined word in this sentence plural or singular? How do you know?       The ants' nest was destroyed.

7.) Where is the conjunction?   Since we have been working so hard, we are going to have some cake.

8.) How many pronouns?  She tried to grab the cat, but it jumped away from her.

Reading

Here is a comprehension for you to complete.

Maths

The ten questions today:

1.) 10 and 1/3 X 4

2.) 0.12 + 1/4 = Give your answer as a decimal.

3.) 83 X 35

4.) 0.984 x 1000 =

5.) How many vertices, edges and faces does a cube have?

6.) I buy a pen worth £1.45, a pencil sharpener worth £0.89 and a exercise book worth £3.21. How much change would I get if I paid with a ten pound note?

7.) What is a hundred thousand more than seventeen?

8.) 10 cubed + 5 squared =

9.) Round 5673 to the nearest thousand, to the nearest hundred and to the nearest ten. So I need 3 answers for this question! You can have 3 marks if you get them all correct.

10.) Name all the factors of 32.

Today's maths is on solving problems involving money. My advice would be to convert them all into pence or pounds, depending on which you prefer to work with. But make sure your answers are in the required format. Some might ask for the answer in pence; others in pounds. Remember there are 100 pence in a pound.

ICT

I have set you a new task on PurpleMash. You will be completing the Year 5 coding course over the next couple of weeks. Try the task that I have set as a 'to do'. It is a quiz on last year's coding words that we used. Use this quiz to revise the meaning of the words, and then next week we will do some coding.

By the way, thank you for all your Mayan quizzes from last week. I enjoyed looking at them. I think I've replied to everyone's now!

PE

The usual. Perhaps you could send in some pictures of what you have been up to? Anyone been on a bike ride? Or a country walk? Who is doing the Joe Wicks exercises?
