Week ending 24.3.23

Posted: Feb 24, 2023 by: Zoe Watkins (ZWatkins) on: Class 3

WOW! What an exciting week we have had! Our class this week have been practicing for the Mrs Sunderland Music Festival in Huddersfield at the Town Hall. We practiced our songs every day and on Thursday we visited the Town Hall with other children from Huddersfield schools. We practiced together, with an orchestra, to sing our songs in a rehearsal ready for the grand performance on that evening. We learnt how to sing professionally with Tom the conductor giving us lots of tips and suggestions.

The evening performance was amazing, our parents and grandparents came to see us performing in the Town Hall, the orchestra played loudly and the lights were shining brightly. There were so many different instruments - oboes, grand piano, violins, violas, drums, clarinets, flutes, trumpets, French horns, double basses and lots more! My favourites songs that we sang were ‘This is Me’ and ‘The Power in Me’.

In Maths this week, we look at time and specifically digital time. We used clocks to help us and practiced with lots of different questions. We also learnt our four times tables.

In Science, we looked at plants and drew plants and flowers and then labelled them. There are roots at the bottom that feed plants and keep them stable, the stems help them balance, the petals attract bees and insects.  There are lots of other jobs that these parts of plants do too.

In RE we have learnt about the Prodigal son. A father and his two sons and their relationships together. The one son was greedy and wanted his father’s money, the father gave it to him and he spent it all quickly. He came back when he realised that he had not been responsible and asked for forgiveness.

In Literacy this week, we have been trying to read and write kennings. These are two-word phrases that include a noun and a verb that describe something perfectly. These originally came from the Vikings and their Norse traditions (skull splitter). For example, sky-scraper, tear-jerker. We used the word cat as a starter to write a kenning e.g., ear-scratcher, nose-nuzzler, fur-licker. We have been reading the book Erik the Viking and we have used this inspiration for writing our own kennings. Sword-slayer, brave-killer, good-fighter, can you think of any others?

In PE we had our PE coach and we began our gymnastics sessions looking at jumps and landings and balancing. In cricket we learnt how to throw and catch.

Our favourite dinner this week was the loaded vegetable pizza.  This is one of our favourites on a Friday!
