Friday 26th June

Posted: Jun 25, 2020 by: Liam Kershaw (LKershaw) on: Class 5

Morning Class 5. I hope you enjoyed the lovely weather. It is meant to cool down later today, but be careful as there is a weather warning for thunder storms. Don't forget to email me your photography project for a chance to win the blog takeover!

Here are the answers to yesterday's daily questions:

1.) Use some words in the sentence to make a contraction:              I will not give up.    will not = won't

2.) Add a comma:              You are okay, aren't you?

3.) Where is the adverb?   I will probably find this work difficult.

4.) What is wrong with this sentence?   Are you okay!    It should have a question mark, not an exclamation mark.

5.) Where is a common noun?       The budgie was perched on Henry's shoulder.    Either one gets you the mark.

6.) Punctuate this:             If you don't understand, let me know.

7.) Where is the preposition?  Julian was already beyond the crest of the hill.

8.) Write a noun from this word family:                 Hungry                 Hungrily             hunger

1.) 674 X 28   18.872

2.) 9478 divided by 12 (short division as usual!)         789 remainder 10

3.) 7/10 as a percentage    70%

4.) Which 3D shape has 4 rectangles and 2 squares in its net?    Cuboid

5.) 75/100 as a fraction in its lowest form.    3/4

6.) How many prime numbers larger than 75, but less than 100?     There are 4: 79, 83, 89 and 97

7.) 49,000 divided by 7,000   7

8.) 6.432 + 5/10    6.932

9.) 0.32 as a percentage.             32%

10.) 10 cubed multiplied by 10 squared             10 cubed = 1000          10 squared = 100         1000 X 100 = 100,000

Reading

I have chapter two of The Great Marvello for you and the multiple choice quiz.

Grammar

Today we are going to recap some word types/classes.

Have a look at these two sentences.

1.) I left before the end of the match.

2.) Indicate before you turn left.

In the first sentence 'left' is a verb, but in the second it is an adverb, as it is describing the verb 'turn'.

In the first sentence 'before' is a preposition, but in the second it is a conjunction.

Sometimes words can be different word types depending on how they are used in a sentence.

Another example is:

I see her everyday walking her dog.

The her in the first part of the sentence is a pronoun, but in the second part of the sentence it is a determiner.

Try page 38 of your Schofield and Sims grammar book.

Maths

As it is still fairly hot this morning (and I have finished all the mental maths tests!), I just thought you could have a go at speed tables today. If you want to spend more time on maths, why not try it twice? See if you can beat your score? Remember to email me with your time for a shout out this afternoon.

Friday afternoon challenge - Computing

This afternoon, I have a suggestion for you from Seb and Max. It is a bunch of tricks you can do on the search engine Google. I have listed some things below to type into Google, and see what happens. Let me know what you think, and if you know any others, send them in to me!

Type in:

1.) Do a barrel roll.

2.) Askew

3.) Google Gravity          (click the I'm Feeling Lucky' button after typing instead of pressing enter).

4.) Google Sky - This doesn't have a funny trick, but the Google Sky service lets you look at the night sky and the different stars etc.

5.) Pacman       - You can play it right at the top of your search results!

6.) Atari Breakout      - Type this in, go to images and click on the first image. It should change it into a cool brick breaking game.

7.) Flip a coin         - It will randomly flip a coin for you.

8.) Google Sphere      - Then press I'm Feeling Lucky

There are loads of Google tricks, so let me know if you find out or know about any others!
