Morning Class 5. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to reply to the letters from Year 4. I do need a couple more volunteers, and I would really appreciate it if some of you could get in touch to offer to do one. It is a really short task.

Here are the answers to yesterday's daily questions:

1.) What type of sentence is this? Are you sure you're okay?    Question

2.) Where is the conjunction?  It started to rain when he fell over.

3.) Add a comma: After checking the lock and trying the handle, Ella realised she was locked out.

4.) Add an apostrophe to make ants plural.    The ants' line was as straight as a ruler.

5.) Which tense is this written in?  The car will be delivered tomorrow. Future

6.) Select the correct word.    We have chose/chosen/choosed/chosed  to stay here.

7.) Where is the article?   His writing as all about an eagle.

8.) Where are the pronouns?   Jeff and Connor wanted to try it for themselves.

1.) 683 X 39    26,637

2.) 2/3 + 1/9 + 5/18         2/3 = 12/18    1/9 = 2/18                               12/18 + 2/18 + 5/18  = 19/18 which is the same as 1 and 1/18

3.) Change to a mixed number 9/2      4 and 1/2

4.) 25% of 20     5

5.) 80/100 as a fraction in its lowest form.   4/5

6.) 4.593 X 5     22.965

7.) 4000 X 8000       32,000,000

8.) 9.056 - 1.991      7.065

9.) 9 squared minus 5 squared      9 squared = 81       5 squared = 25            81 - 25 = 56

10.) 1 - 7/8 =    1/8

Reading

I have set you a quiz for chapter 6 of A Bridge on Fire. Enjoy!

Grammar

Today, we are going to revisit standard English and look at it in regards to adverbs.

If you remember, we nearly always write in standard English, but sometimes we don't speak that way. Mr. C is often the first to correct me when I don't!

Here is an example of a sports commentator using non-standard English:

Yeah, Jess done good to reach the final. Ben were in a difficult heat.

The underlined words are all non-standard English. Yeah should be yes. Done should be did. Were should be was.

Here are two more examples of non-standard English where they have used an adjective instead of an adverb.

Jess done good to reach the final.

Zain ran quick in his race.

'Good' and 'Quick' are adjectives and they should be used to describe a noun, but they have been used to describe a verb here. Instead it should be:

Jess did well to reach the final.

Zain ran quickly in his race.

This error of using an adjective instead of an adverb is fairly common. Try page 36 of your grammar book.

Maths

Speed tables first. Make sure you send me your time by 2pm for a shout out!

Here is the mental maths for this week.

Spanish

Last week, we did some French. I thought this week we could look at Spanish. I know we don't do it in school (apart from Spanish Club), but it is a fantastic language to learn, and I find it easier than French.

There is a short video to watch first, and then a bit of reading to do with some vocabulary.

After that, there is another video with some sports vocabulary. Practise copying what they say.

The sheet at the end has all the vocabulary you will need on the second sheet. Have a go at writing in Spanish.

Then there is an interactive task at the very end. You go through the flashcards, then it will ask you to complete a quiz. Enjoy!

Extra challenge: I have written in Spanish below. Can you guess what I have said?

Me gusta la musica y el futbol. No me gusta el raton!

PE

To finish the week of rubbish weather, I think you should have a go at some core strength exercises. See how long you can plank for, do some sit ups or crunches as well.
