Friday 22nd May

Posted: May 21, 2020 by: Liam Kershaw (LKershaw) on: Class 5

Morning, Class 5. Just to let you know, I will be in school today and there is building work taking place downstairs. As a result, the Internet will not be on for most of the day, so I will not be able to reply as frequently as I normally would. I will get back to you as soon as I can, and I promise I will upload the Friday shout outs for speed tables when I get home. It should be between 4 and 5, so keep an eye on the blog at that time.

Also, just to say, I still haven't heard from a couple of you this week. Please drop me an email over half term, so I can see how you are getting on. I will be checking my email once a day over half term, and I will post a couple of small blog posts. I have lots of plans for our home school work after half term, but if there is anything you are desperate to learn about, send in your ideas and you may find I include them in the home school work next half term! If I haven't heard from you this week, I will be giving you a call on the Monday after half term to check how you are.

Here are the answer to yesterday's questions:

1.) Where is the determiner?   This pencil is broken!

2.) How many pronouns?   We shouldn't listen to him.

3.) Where is the preposition? The clouds below the plane looked like cotton wool!

4.) Punctuate this sentence:   "I couldn't find the answer!" yelled Justin.

5.) Is the word I've underlined singular or plural?   The school's car park was full of cars. Singular

6.) Where is the adverb?   Kevin is arriving soon.

7.) Where does the comma go? We needed to test the temperature, check the cake and leave it for another 20 minutes.

8.) Add the brackets.                The car (purchased in 1967) was a classic.

1.) 703 X 49    34,447

2.) 6000 X 6      36,000

3.) 70,000 divided by 70     1000

4.) 78.09 X 10    780.9

5.) 89.9 divided by 100   0.899

6.) 7 and 2/3 X 8    61 and 1/3

7.) What is the area of a rectangle with a length of 400cm and a breadth of 30cm? 12,000

8.) What is the perimeter of the same rectangle? 860cm

9.) What is 10 cubed divided by 10 squared?   10 cubed = 1000 and 10 squared = 100.   1000 divided by 100 = 10

10.) Name a prime number that is more than 20 and less than 25.   23

Today's work:

Reading

Spend 30 minutes reading today, please. Evie is reading a Tom Gates book and really enjoying it. Then she is starting The Boy at the Back of the Class. Keep it up, Evie!

Grammar

Today we are looking at how to link paragraphs. A good way to link paragraphs (which is a Y5 writing target) is to use linking adverbials at the start of the paragraphs.

You may start a sentence with:

Firstly,

Secondly,

Finally,

This shows the order of your paragraphs, and helps connect the ideas together and makes your writing sound better when it is being read. We can also use adverbials that are more complex such as:

First of all,

In addition,

Furthermore,

In stories, we can use adverbials of time and place to link paragraphs:

Later,

Nearby,

Outside the cabin,

Have a go at page 34 in your Schofield and Sims grammar book.

Maths

Speed tables again! I will be doing it in school tomorrow, so I hopefully will be back on top form! I will be posting speed tables shout outs between 4 and 5 tomorrow, so make sure you get your time to me before then!

Here is the mental maths test for today. The answers will be in the shout out post this afternoon.

Computing

As we had a debate about video games yesterday, we are going to look at how computer games are made. We did make one earlier in the year on PurpleMash, but here is some more information and activities for you.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zk7f382

I did NOT know that Pac-Man was inspired by a pizza?! Check out the videos on the link above to find out more. You then have two activities. One of them is to design your very own video game character. Then, you will become a secret agent to cipher a code. Look out for the explanation of what 'cipher' means in the game. You will then use an 'enigma machine' to decipher a code. Perhaps you could send me a secret code, and tell me the offset number, and I could decipher your message? Email me your secret codes!

Also, don't forget to contribute to the Padlet in the link below. If you put one on yesterday and you didn't include your name, please comment with your first name on your post on Padlet, so I can see who wrote it!

PE

Toby, on Wednesday, did 28,462 steps! That's a HUGE amount! So, Toby is in the lead so far this week now. Can anyone beat him on the final day of the contest? I will be trying in school today!

Half term optional homework

Over half term, if you want to, I would like you to research a country you have never been to before. You could find out the population, its flag, who the leader is, what natural resources does it have, how many tourists it gets each year.

You never know, you may become really interested in a country and decide to go visit there one day when we can visit places again!
