Tuesday 19th May

Posted: May 18, 2020 by: Liam Kershaw (LKershaw) on: Class 5

Good morning, Class 5. I hope you have had a productive start to the week! I had an unfortunate incident with a spider yesterday! It was sat staring at me on my pillow! Not a great start to the week for me! Luckily, I wasn't too scared and got rid of it! Can you imagine if this had happened to Ms. Kewley?! I dread to think how she would have reacted!

Here are the answers to yesterday's daily questions:

1.) Where is the determiner?   I need my trainers tomorrow.

2.) Where is the pronoun?  Graham grabbed the grease-proof paper from the cupboard above him

3.) Where is the preposition? There was a cupboard under the stairs.

4.) Punctuate this sentence:  He couldn't wait to watch it on Netflix.

5.) Is the word I've underlined singular or plural? Hint: look where the apostrophe is.    The cubs' mother was nowhere to be seen.   Plural - the apostrophe is after the s.

6.) Which word is the pronoun referring to? Find the pronoun first, and think about who it is referring to.

Jeff and Julie were sitting in the park on her favourite blanket.   The pronoun is 'her' and it is referring to 'Julie'.

7.) Where does the comma go?         I need to speak to him, but I keep forgetting.

8.) Where is the abstract noun?  Jeremy felt anxiety when he thought about the events of the day.

1.) 603 X 34   20,502

2.) 500 X 50   25,000

3.) 60,000 divided by 300   200

4.) 6.098 X 100   609.8

5.) 594 divided by 100   5.94

6.) 5 and 4/5 X 3      17 and 2/5

7.) What is the area of a square with sides of 7cm?  49 cm squared

8.) What is the perimeter of the same square?   28cm

9.) 7 squared add 3 cubed.   7 squared = 49       3 cubed = 27       49 + 27 = 76

10.) What is the sum of all the prime numbers between 4 and 15? The prime numbers between 4 and 15 are: 5, 7, 11, 13. The sum means to add, so add them all together, which is 36.

English

Yesterday, you should have written your introduction to your biography. It should've been written in a way that hooks readers in. Today, I would like you to write your next two paragraphs. Last week, you should've organised your notes into different subheadings, so you will use these notes to form your two paragraphs today.

Your first paragraph might be called something like 'early life'. I look forward to reading them! Remember, I would love to have a sneak peek of your biographies, and I will upload the final written ones later this week when we are done.

Don't forget to look at your writing targets in the front of your books and make sure you are checking your grammar, punctuation and spelling. Using the 'Exciting Sentences' will make your writing sound better. I have attached 2 documents with some of the Year 5 and Year 4 'Exciting Sentences'. Remember, not all the Exciting Sentences will be appropriate in a biography.

Here are your 8 grammar questions for today:

1.) Where are the 2 determiners? We had many ideas for our story.

4.) Punctuate this sentence:     ive only got three left explained samantha

5.) Is the word I've underlined singular or plural?   The oxen's habitat is being destroyed.

6.) Which word(s) is the pronoun referring to? This is called 'cohesion' when the pronoun matches the subject of the sentence.

Adam and Anton were ashamed of themselves.

7.) Where does the comma go?   Once we get to the museum we will be split into our groups.

8.) Where is the abstract noun?  Dogs show happiness by wagging their tails.

Maths

Today, we are going to look at converting improper fractions into mixed numbers. Remember, to change an improper fraction into a mixed number, you divide the numerator by the denominator.

So for 6/4, you divided 6 by 4. There is one 4 and 2 left over when you divided 6 by 4.

So it is 1 and 2/4.

To convert mixed numbers into improper fractions, you do the opposite. So with 6 and 4/5, you multiply the denominator by the whole number (6) and you add the numerator. So 6 X 5 = 30 + 4 = 34/5

In the link below, there are two videos that explain converting mixed numbers and improper fractions in a slightly different way. Whichever way you think about it is fine. Make sure you do the tasks when the video asks you to pause.

Then, there are two worksheets for you to be getting on with. Remember, this is revision - we have already learnt this in school, but I want to make sure you feel confident with this skill.

In the first activity, you may be able to simplify the fraction at the end of the mixed number. We looked at simplifying fractions yesterday. So for example, 5 and 2/4 is the same as 5 and 1/2. Keep an eye out for fractions you can simplify!

Topic

Yesterday, you looked at recycling and sustainability. I asked you not to do activity 3 on the web link. We will be doing that today. If you load up the worksheet on the third activity, you will see the 'respond' box asks you to make a leaflet that explains the advantages of recycling. It says include the benefits of recycling and how recycling can be encouraged.

This activity can be as simple or detailed as you wish. You might want to do some more research into the benefits of recycling. You could use kidrex.org to search for some facts on recycling and included these in your leaflet. You could also look at ways different countries are encouraging recycling and suggest ways that we could do the same. Please try to make it as colourful and informative as you can.
