Homework for this week (due 20.9.19)

Posted: Sep 14, 2019 by: Liam Kershaw (LKershaw) on: Class 5

Good morning!

The homework on Mathletics this week is based on partitioning numbers (splitting them up) in different ways. We have been looking at how to do this in maths this week as it helps with mental addition and subtraction.

For example: 43,567 + 700.

A lot of children will try to add the '7' to the '5' in the hundreds column. They will get the answer 12 so will put a '2' in the hundreds column but they don't always remember to add the 1 to the thousands column.

So if we look at the number in a different way, it can help remove this mistake.

43,567 might have 5 hundreds in the hundreds column, but it actually has 435 hundreds overall. So if the children see this as 435 hundreds add 7 more hundreds they should get to the answer of 442 hundreds. Once they know they have 442 hundreds, they can simply put the tens and units back in.

So then its 442 hundreds, 6 tens and 7 units which equals 44,267.

It is just one way to do mental addition and subtraction and is another tool for their maths belt! The Mathletics task will be asking them to look at numbers and say how many thousands/hundreds/tens there are overall.

There is also another task on practising their times tables to make sure they are back on track from last year.

A reminder that the spellings are the same as last week. The children performed well in the spelling test last week, so they just need to keep it up for the test next week. The words are: Thumb, crumb, doubt, climb, tomb, numb, debt, comb.

Have a great weekend!

Mr. K
