Friday 8th May 2020 - V.E. Day Celebrations

Posted: May 7, 2020 by: Emma Barker (EBarker) on: Class 2

Today is V.E. Day remembrance day, this is a significant anniversary of V.E. Day and many celebrations had been planned across the country to recognise the heroic actions and sacrifices made by people at the time. So today, we’re a little ‘off timetable’ as it’s a bank holiday and here are some activities that you might want try at home, and maybe you could have your own celebration for V.E. Day!

Have a look at this video clip and have a go at answering the questions:

  1. How long did World War II last?
  2. What does V.E. stand for and can you work out what anniversary we are celebrating this year?
  3. Who appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to celebrate with the people?
  4. How did the British people celebrate V.E. Day?
  5. How long after the war did rationing continue?

Have a look at this photo and talk to your adult about what you can see:

  • What are people wearing?
  • What can be seen at the back of the photo?
  • Why can we not see many men there?
  • Do people look happy or sad?
  • What sort of street is the party on?
  • Is there evidence of food or music?

Other activities that you might like to do today…

  • Design a medal for the returning heroes
  • There will be a moment of silence at 11am to mark the sacrifice made by those who served during the war, why not join in?
  • Have a look at this information from English Heritage – you can make special wartime recipes or even learn to swing dance!
  • Make some bunting to decorate your house, you can find a template here
  • On your daily walk today, could you visit the war memorial?
  • At 3pm, people are also being invited to take to their doorsteps to raise a glass and clap during The Nation's Toast to the Heroes of World War Two.

However you celebrate, let me know by sending in your photos!

Enjoy the bank holiday weekend. See you here on Monday!
