Children's Mental Health Week

Posted: Feb 11, 2022 by: Mrs Parker (NHemingway) on: Class 1

11th February2 2022

This week has been children' mental health week. We have done lots of acivities to help children understand what is mental health and how can we help ourselves and others to have a positive mental health. The theme for this year was 'Growing Together' so we looked at the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We discussed how we grow and change as the caterpillar did in the book. We created some beautiful butterflies using the end of a paint brush to show how we have grown since we were babies. We learnt how to be still by completing some mindful breathing to help us calm down and relax. We also took part in some mindful movements, trying to balance and focus. We discussed how we could uses these techniques at home to help our mind stay positive and healthy.

This week in our outdoor learning session we were thinking about using all our senses. We played 'Bat and Moth' and learned how echolocation works and had fun finding natural objects in the woods to match our adjectives. Our book was 'Mole's Sunrise' which is a lovely story of a mole who can't see but who experiences his first sunrise by feeling the warmth in his face and by listening to the other animals describing it to him!

In Science, we've been looking at what materials are suitable for building houses for the three little pigs (as well as enjoying the story again - it's one of our favourites!). We've had a go at building some houses and then thought about what questions we might need to ask each other and what the properties of the materials are that we used.

Have a lovely weekend, we are nearly there with only one more week to go!
