VE Day 2020

VE Day bunting: How to make bunting for VE Day - Where can I buy ...

So our day of celebrations is upon us.  You have all planned so carefully, thinking about activities, food, decorations and who you might invite.  Such caring and thoughtful children (and adults).  I was talking to my mum and dad last night and they are going to be having a cup of tea with their neighbour (at the end of the garden and using careful social distancing).  Mum is also going to ring her Auntie Sadie.  Auntie Sadie was around for the celebrations of VE Day 75 years ago.  Mum remembers lots of conversations with her family about the war when she was younger, as she was evacuated from Liverpool for a short while and her house (as were many others) was bombed during the Blitz in Liverpool.  However she doesn't remember any conversations about the celebrations on VE day so she thought she would find out what happened on her street in Liverpool back in 1945, by asking Auntie Sadie.  There were quite a number of Land Girls living close by too.  When you get a minute you could find out who these girls were and what they did.

If you get an opportunity today, maybe you could find out if anyone in your family has any memories of celebrating VE day.  It could be that someone remembers the 50th anniversary or earlier.

On to the party!  There are so many different games and activities that have been planned by you, so enjoy every minute of it.  Take lots of photos if you can or draw some pictures for us and become an artist for a while.

Listen to some music from the time.  Big Band music was very popular.  Glen Miller is one of the most well know Big Band Swing musicians.  He played the trombone.  Have a listen here.  You could play some of his music during your party.

You might like to listen to some other similar music.  Lots of more modern artists play Swing Time and Big Band music.  It is very lively and upbeat.

You could dance the Lindy hop to it or learn a few other moves from other dances.

At 11am there will be a minutes silence if you would like to join in.  We certainly will be in our house.  I believe that the Queen will making a speech and that the BBC are playing the famous speech that Winston Churchill made on the day 75 years ago (BBC 2:45) "We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing."

So whatever you get up to today, enjoy yourselves and keep safe.
