TEACHER: Mrs Barker
I am delighted to be teaching Year 5 this year and am looking forward to a year of fun and amazing learning!
We are beginning the school year using our science topic Earth, Sun and Moon to inspire us in many areas of the curriculum. Initially we will be developing our geographical skills discovering where we live in the United Kingdom, locating cities and rivers using our atlas and mapping skills. We will identify the continents of the world before we begin to consider as scientists why we have night and day, time zones, shadows and learn how scientists though-out history have made discoveries about the position of the Earth, Sun and Moon in the Solar System. We will learn about the space race to the Moon and become journalists as we report on this historical event.
Our literacy will be ‘out of this world’ as we use the setting of space to inspire our descriptive and story writing skills. We will be science -fiction story writers which will take us on a learning journey of complex sentences, descriptive phases and imaginary worlds!
Our learning will be further enhanced with a trip in November to Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire where will explore further the wonders of the universe and see the Lovell Telescope.
As the year continues we will go on to learn about the Kings and Queens of England, the Americas including a focus on Jamaica, and the Ancient Greeks. Where possible links will be made with different subjects to give opportunities to develop a range of skills and experiences.
In the spring term we will be involved in Strictly Pennine which we will perform at the Lawrence Batley Theatre! A truly amazing experience and I for one can’t wait!
